Finding a genuine one could be difficult, but if you find anything with a 180 ohm resistance you can adapt it to do the job. Good luck,

Sorry, no I don"t, but I know if you can find one in that range and adapt in to your tank, the dash unit will work with it. i found one at a swap meet. had to re-drill the holes in the tank, and bend the arm to make it fit, etc. but it works pretty good. It only registers up to 7/8, and falls off the end when it gets down to 1/8, but that gives me a good indication. I could probably get it more accurate by adjusting the arm a little shorter, so it goes up and down further, but I'm happy with it the way it is. There are new ones available from time to time on ebay, but theya re about $200 I think.

What do you think about using an oil sender unit from the engine? Have to modify the arm and cork but...... I have one in reserv.

    Thank you, Bror

You would have problems converting the movement from vertical to horizontal. the oil unit sits on the side of the pan. The original tank unit overcame theis problem by using a set of bevel gears, so if you can find a set that will do this, then go ahead!

Try Atwater Kent, phone number 508-792-9500. They make fuel tank sending units. I know they make one for a 29 Essex as I have one. They might just have one for your car. They are not cheep but at least they make them up

For my 1930 Essex Supersix Sedan I used a sending unit from Princess Auto (www.princessauto.com/ ). The item is #4230157. The regular cost is $19.99 but I got mine on sale for $9.99! It almost fits the tank perfectly except I had to drill a few new screw holes. This is a universal unit that can be adjusted to fit almost size tank. It seems to work quite well with the Essex gauge and a six volt system even though it's designed for 12 volts.

Wow, this is the kind of information we all need! Certainly a better deal then the original replacement. Just a little tip - when drilling new screw holes, use a hand drill, not an electric drill, which could have arcing around the commutator brushes. No sense blowing yourslef up in the process! I know one guy who filled his tank (first time after restoring his car), and found the bottom riddled with pin holes. He removed the tank, and took to it with a disc grinder -- Boom! Well, he needed a new tank anyway, but luckily he wasn't injured, apart from singed hair and eybrows.

Another source of fuel sending units are boat stores. For an example of what's available, click on the the link.

If you have the fuel sending unit, you can have it rebuilt by these people.
