308 Engine ID question.

Hi All



I am an old fan of hudsons and have visited this forum for information many times, but as of now I still am unsure of what kind of engine I have. I bought a 1950 supersix 3 or 4 years ago and it has sat until yesterday. It is a 4 dr with a Hornet interior, 3spd with overdrive ... the engine has Twin H Power, a silver iron 262 head and a red block. There is no serial number up front on the block but it has the extra rib above the oil pan so I am assuming it's a 308, the serial number stamped into the top driver side is F11290, the casting number under the distributor is 1265, below that is the everyday 5325000 and below it is a 2 ... my question is where do you think the engine came from or what year block is it?

S6, this sounds suspiciously like a '55-56 engine that's had a 262 head installed. Look under the distributor and see if there's a "boss" cast into the block that looks like it would be another dipstick hole if it were drilled out (compare it with the boss to the rear where the dipstick actually is). If this second boss is there, it's a '55-'56 factory replacement engine that was machined to go in the Detroit-built stepdowns vs. in a Kenosha car. Dr. Doug clued me in to this when he ID'd an engine of this type for a friend recently. The dipstick in mid-block would be drilled out if the engine were destined for a Kenosha car, which had a much different oil pan design because of different steering linkage, etc., under the engine.

PW .. I went out and looked at the engine. There is a bolt in a tapped hole about 2 inches to the front of the engine from the dip stick hole. There does not appear to be any other place one would be drilled in. I have taken a photo of it and will attempt to post it along with this message.



My theory is a previous owner got ahold of wrecked Hornet and scavenged the motor and interior, he used the 262 head to get an increase in compression ... may have been his way of hot rodding it at the time.

its a 308. Second boss has been tapped and a bolt put in it. Reinforcing rib is clearly visible in the picture.
