Ok I was directed here by some folkes on a couple other forumns. This forumn was HIGHLY reccomended.

I have been working on old vehicals for a long time .I am mostly into the Model T and I do have a 66 Ford pickup and 61 Tbird.

But I do grab stuff sometimes that is totaly unrelated just to save it.

Such is the case with a Essex Power dome flat head engine and transmisson from what I was told was from a 32 Essex.

It seems complete except for the dang carb. And I aint found the first picture of a engine like it,much less what the carb should look like.

I dont have a Essex, wouldnt mind haveing 1.I got it in case someone that could use this thing and I could trade for model T parts or whatever.

But in the mean time I will be giveing it alot of Kroil and and I would like to learn about it and learn what kind of carb it needs and such.

If I get other projects further along and have time,I have read about a speedster that uses a simliar engine that is kinda neat. I will try to get a photo or 2 posted for you all to see the engine. Also, where would any numbers be located that would help in further identifing it?

Not sure precisely where the numbers would be on that engine block, but you might look on the passenger side of the engine toward the front, just under where the cyl. head joins the block. In later 1930's models there is a flat spot there, with a number stamped into it.

If you need a place to post a photo the web for free, the Hudson club maintains a photo album site at http://groups.msn.com/HudsonEssexTerraplaneBulletinBoard/_whatsnew.msnw . After you sign in, you can hit the PICTURES link and actually start your own photo album with just your photos in it. Then you can determine the unique URL of the photo by right-clicking on it, then come back here and add the photo URL so everyone can go there to see it. (If you hit the little yellow icon in the REPLY blank, you can actually post the photo's URL there, and the photo itself will appear on your message, at this page.)
  • well I got word today that I will be getting the steering column and at least 1 bumper and the spare tire carrier from this same car. So that is good.

Better behind my shed than the crushers claws.

I will attempt a photo post.

BTW thanks for the reply and the explanation of how to get a picture on here. The body of this car was sold for street rod purpose and the buyer didnt come back to get these parts and they sat around my buddys shop for a while. He got 1 of those #((@ letters from the county and decided to give me some stuff instead of sending it all to the junk man.

I know this thing doesnt look to good but dang it was free. The best I can tell it is stuck but I doubt it will take much to free it up.Wedsday afternoon I will get the plugs out and get some Kroil in there.Or I may try a new stuff I read about yesterday.a 50-50 mixture of acetone and transmission fluid. It is said it works better than Kroil.I will have to test it myself to believe that.If someone has a photo of the carb setup this engine uses I would appreciate a lead on it as I need to know what to look for.

Hey, after you fix it and paint it up, it's gonna look great! All of our cars and parts looked like this when we first got 'em!

Maybe you should ask your friend for the name of the guy who bought the rest of the car! Maybe he lost interest and you could get it for a song! Then you would have a place to put the engine, steering column, one bumper and the spare tire carrier!
  • Oh yea, most of my T parts when first aquired or as they may still be waiting in line to get fixed, would make this thing look new as it is!.

I hadnt even thought to ask where the body went as in who bought it.
  • I ask about the car today. It is now a street rod somewhere.I got the parts that my friend mentioned.Nothing worth much except maby the spare tire bracket. The bumper is broke on 1 end allthough I have the piece the brackets are bent up to.

the steering column outer houseing is rusted in 2 about 8 inchs from the top.The shaft is in tact, just the tube is rusted apart. So I doubt anything is good except for the nice aluinum bracket on it.

If it's from a 32 Essex the engine had a Carter carburetor (W1-242S). You can find the numbers for starter and generator at this web site:

    http://www.freewebs.com/hudsontech/index.htm

Those numbers will also give you an idea what year you do have - if it's actually a 32 Essex.

Hope this is of some help.

  • Thanks.I will see if I can get down to the shed and check the engine over before this thunderboomer hits.We have had some mean thunderstorms lately.
  • i see a few parts on that engine that my poor essex could use.
  • 1362373 is the numbers stamped on the top left of the block. 37000 is cast in the block right above the starter.

Seems to be an extra number there - engine numbers for 1932 Essex started at 136,000. No way could they go to 1,362,373.
