Rodders Digest * IS * my favorite mag!

I just picked up the June '07 Rodders Digest and thumbed through it and have decided it worthy of my hard earned money to get a subscription!
Let alone the good stuff I gleaned from the April issue - this one is packed full of relevant stuff any of us could be working on and It had 2 pictures of Hudsons - a rarity in mainstream publications!

- 1st Hudson was shown in an article on February Speed Week where they got a bunch of old racers and took them out on Daytona Beach...I'm not sure who owns this car but doesn't it look at home on the sand?
- The second one is Hudson from a Wrecking Yard in Rapid City SD Moore's Auto Salvage. http://www.mooresautosalvage.com/parts.asp?division=5&make=Hudson
- A great article on wiring relays (good to know for adding things like, electric windows and rotating HUD displays)
- An article on applying Lizard Skin insulation.
- A really neat write up on a 48 GM PU with a great chop and sectioned hood. I like the way they did the build out with the "bright" metal areas clearly show where each piece was cut and welded back together. And for those wondering what a pancacked hood is - there you go! (Can't wait to do that on a stepdown someday...) - the finished truck is really cool - but I'm going to make you buy the mag to see it!

Subscribed on 2/22/2007 - still haven't seen ANYTHING from them...
If I recall, one of their other 'Mag rags' that I subscribe to took quite a while to get going too...
If I don't see it in a week or so, I'll probably give them a call.
I'd give them a call now - it is a bi-monthly publication but I would think you would have gotten yours by now...0 -
Saw photos of a 46' Hudson pick up where someone did that to the hood. It looked good. He also made the front (leeding) edge of the hood lean back just a little bit. Now every time I see a stock hood it looks like it's sticking up too high. Anyone know the truck. It was built in central California about two or three years ago.0

Dan, I guess you know you've really messed-up now. You have an incomplete project, and you're getting a magazine that has all the new "bells and whistles" in the auto world. Now, you'll be changing your mind on everything, and won't be able to decide what to do!(ha)

I know this is going to sound stupid...but when I get a "vision" for a particular car I make a plan and for the most part stick to it.
I'd really love to do a full on custom stepdown - someday but this 49 is going to be a driver and its near the fast track with the modifications now winding down to the point I only need to spend money and bolt on parts...The only change I really keep contemplating now is making the rear doors suicide style and that's mostly to make it easier for me to get the pooch into and out of the back (and it looks better on a 4 dr  )0 -

I took my 52 sedan in to get it painted last year. One of the guys at the shop stopped me on one of my many visits and showed me a (rough) drawing he had done of my car. He had sketched it with longer front doors, as if we used front doors from a 2 door, and shortened the rear doors, and had them opening them suicide style (just the rear doors). In effect, like on my GMC extended cab p/u.
I kinda blew him off at first, because I just wanted it painted. But on my next visit I looked at his sketch again.... and again.... the low roofline, stretched front doors, short rear suicide doors, now it is etched in my brain.

NExt time for sure...you're talking about adding hundreds if not a few thousand hours to a build with those mods - but think bigger!
Why shorten the rear doors? Lengthen the car so you can use the 2 front coupe doors with the larger stock rear doors? What's a couple more inches on the wheelbase anyway?
Then you may as well do the rear doors suicide style and remove the center pillar and have hollywood style side windows - then the entire side of the car could open up. Along with some swivel Buckets you could have a party inside the mini-limo
Don't forget the lower belt-line needs to be shorter so a 2" sectioning is in order as well and then a 2-1/2 to 1" reverse pie cut would make a nice subtle chop - oh yeah the hood and fenders needs to get pancaked as well... would make for an interesting custom eh?
Another thing I'd like to do someday is take some of Frank Springs original stepdown drawing and create them for real - that would be fun!0 -
Update:
Have been a subscriber since early March... Well, still haven't received ONE subscription issue of this publication, although Buckaroo (parent company) indicates my subscription is current. They are sending ANOTHER replacement issue (for the August 2007 issue), and are suggesting that I contact the local post office & have them 'put a watch' on my mail.
Who knows, maybe there is a 'rodder' in the local post office...
A bit 'weird'... While on the phone I asked about the promised "T-Shirt" - it hadn't arrived either - and was told that it is only sent with the "2 year" subscription (confusing - 24 issues, actually covers 4 years). The minimum order is a "1 year" subscription (12 issues, actually covering 2 years) - the one I got/ordered.
They're sending me a hat, based upon the '1 year' subscription... (which I hadn't gotten either).
Honestly - I think that my subscription 'fell thru the cracks', and they are making excuses & blaming the post office. I get Consumer Reports, Truck Builder (another Buckaroo pub..), Classic Trucks and WTN - and have never missed a single issue (yet)...
I've still been buying mine from the newstand at my local QFC - the rag is good - but I'm getting a little concerned hearing these stories.
Did anyone else subscribe?
Since moving I have had several problems with vandals getting into my mail and possibly lost items through the postal service.
About 2 months ago I bought a autoxray code reader on ebay for a good deal - Fed Ex delivered it to the wrong house 2 blocks away and not even the same last name...a neighbor was house sitting and recognized my name and hand delivered it for me - otherwise I'd been out 150 clams!
What's wrong with these people these days? :mad:0 -
I just bought the latest issue from Barnes & Noble. Its an ok mag, but nothing to write home about in my opinion. Boy, I sure miss Custom Rodder. Don't get me wrong, I like Street Rods as well, just this mag has most of it covering this vintage, and I don't own one anymore. I haven't seen one out there to compete with Custom Rodder yet. OSR and CKD are alright (one had that 48 Hud Coupe a couple issues ago), at least you can see some cars built by their owners. And they do show more of the Kustoms in the 50's and 60's, but I can only handle so much of the rust or flat black '32 Fords or Model A's.

I'd say this new edition of RD is not as good as the 3 previous ones as they had more rod/car show pics. The previous issues had several more technical articles that I found to be inline with projects for the 49 - hopefully this is not a trend - I did like the tech article on adding some bends to the exhaust to quiet it down just a bit - makes sense.
They also did a nice 2 page write up on the Von-Dutch van and other related articles that were sold at auction...the van already changed hands from the BJ auction is now in the hands of Steve Kafka who has a good name in the pinstriping field with books and videos, brushes etc. I'm glad it ended up in someones hands that really appreciates the history.0 -

Yeah, they've got a nice 30 Model A Tudor in that issue as well. They have a custom sled on page 86 at the top and I'm not sure, but the body lines look like a stepdown coupe. Any of guys seen that one? It looks maybe gold with green flames and molded lake pipes. A very nice machine. CK Deluxe mag also has a nice '41 Merc Kustom as well.0 -

Dan, Dan, Dan...have you checked out any of the "tuner" magazines, or "Lowrider?" LOL0 -

I kinda like some of the cars in Ol Skool, but the women just make it too cheesy to have laying around the house. #1 son noticed my copy in my bathroom library, and immediately christened it "Rod and Skank".0 -

Since my son is only 4, he's only into the rods. Since he's been reading for awhile now, he's figured out that the show pics in the mags with descriptions, usually say what year and make the cars are; which he then is proud to run and show Dad what year and make the cars are! And now he usually doesn't want any help from me unless the description doesn't state it, though he tries to guess first.
My kid is so cool!!!!!! I want to get him a "Chicks Dig Me!" shirt, but Mom won't have it! :-(
