Just thought you guys might like to see this old photo I found. Yes, that does say 18 cents a gallon on the gas pump.

Very cool picture, at a 3% inflation rate per year, that would be $1.27 in todays dollars.

Do you see that "A" sticker on the right windshield. License says 1942. By that time all gas was rationed.... Stickers were "A" "B' & "C"

This guy must have been VIP, cause you got first choice at the pump.. Correct me someone if I am wrong. We had an "A" sticker on the 41 Packard we had. My stepDad was a wholesale food & Liquor Distributor. I don't remember though how many gallons an "A" sticker allowed you per week...Hi got the "A" sticker on the car cause the delivery trucks were A'd also....

I remember on the back side of the sticker, facing in, it said "IS THIS TRIP NECESSARY?" (I was a child, sat in my mother's lap in the '37 Chevy we had when the war started, & couldn't see over the hood) and remember thinking "of course the trip is necessary, you HAVE to go to grandma's for Thanksgiving", LOL.

Think my dad, who was a lawyer, had an "A" sticker which alloted the least amount of gas. I still have our family's ration books.
  • The "A" was for four gallons a week; "B" was for eight, and "C" had a higher limit, though I don't know what that is. My granddad was the head of the local power company, and utilities had the highest priority, along with doctors and other essential people.

That Terraplane picture is great! I've copied that for my little '37 TP picture file.

My 1942 Hudson Two Door still has the original "A" & "B" sticker on the front screen.
