Looking to paint the tail light "ornaments" on my '51 Hornet, now that bezels are back from plater. I've found a red acrylic paint in a hobby shop that is intended for use on plastic models. Wondering if the acrylic would be compatible with the silver paint which the manufacturer used in the crest elements, so that they could simply be painted over- but don't see any way of testing without possibly messing up.

Would surely be easier for old eyes and shaky hands! Anyone have experience with painting them? Is there a source for the plastic ornaments if this doesn't work out? THANKS, Walt-LA

KGap sells unpainted ones for...gulp...10.00 each!

For unpainted that sounds a bit excessive - unless they are vacu-chrome plated and you just paint the background....

Has anyone bought the kgap pieces before?
  • The kgap ornaments have the silver paint where it needs it, and we don't paint the background, because it will be either black or red depending on yhe year. Plastic model paint should work fine on them.

Based on the information D Springs provided you only need to paint the red part on the KGap replacement - Thanks Dany!

For those or your original pieces using a single sided flat blade razor - or even the edge of an exacto blade - makes a good straight edge to paint against with a small brush to get the details right.

If there is a really tight spot - you can put some paint on the end of a needle and "daub" it in just a little at a time.

One of these will probably be a must! $6.99 Harbor Freight - just put something between the alligator clip and the piece.

  • not sure if it is compatible, but I would look for red (or black) model spray paint, give them a few quick coats, then spray a primer over the top to finish them.

my question is, what models get what color?

    Is it 48-49 are black

    and 50-51 are red?

    or is 50 black?

THANKS ALL! Rambo- Love your gizmo to hold parts. Have a lighted magnifying lens from architects office, but nothing to hold subject. Maybe can find a lead brick to attach alligator clip. But at $ 6.00 and change, it looks like Harbor Freight has something else to find space for....

51'a are red. Believe '50's are too, all earlier are black.

Think mine most likely came from Dick Bell, But sound as though are the same as Dany's.

Again, Thanks all. Will paint this evening. Walt
  • 50's are black only the Hornets are red. So red started in 51.
