You can fit any 6 cylinder engine from '34 thru '47, but will have to play round slightly with the engine mount brackets and the exhaust pipe, as the chassis were slightly different over the years. Rear engine mounts are the same for all years, but the clutch throw-out linkages are different. '34-'36 are the same, and then they changed the ends of the lever and pads from '37 on. Exhaust manifolds are bigger from '37 onwards, and the water jackets on '34 -'35 have the inlet pipe on the bottom, and on top from '36 onwards. Hope this helps.

Well If You Have A Ku ( Long Wheelbase) 34 You Could Put A Hornet Engine In Your Car So 232,262,308 The Early 6's That Geoff Spoke Of Or You Could Put The 8 Cyl Engine From 34 To 47 And The 8 From 48 To 52 All Will Fit On The Orignal Mounts But It Must Be A Ku 116 Wb Car

Well, don't forget that they moved the distributor up to the top rear of the engine block in '40 (umm....er....uh....well, give or take a year!) and you'd have to punch a hole in the firewall to accommodate it. So, best stick to earlier sixes.

The '37 - 39 6 has the big ports and can be equipped with a two barrell carburetor, this ups the horsepower by about 20hp, I am told, so you may want to find a '37 six, this would also avoid the problem that Jon points out about the placement of the distributor, so you won't have to cut a hole in the firewall.

If you are going to go to a "modern" Hudson 6, I would consider the Jet engine, which I think is 202ci and it will fit and you will have all of the benefits of that engine.
  • Thanks all, I feel much better now about this heartbreaking event. I truly want to keep her as original as posible. If i cant find a 34 engine she will get a different hudson 6 but there will be no smaall blocks in my car.

    thanks again chuck

Chuck, I don't recall if you mentioned whether or not you were an H-E-T Club member. But if so it would be worth your while to advertise your engine needs in the 'wanted' section of the Club magazine's classifieds. While this Hudson Forum is a fantastic place, there are many more Hudson-oriented readers of the White Triangle News than there are viewers here. I don't think it should be too hard to locate a '34 or up engine in good shape.

Another thought is to look on hotrod forums for guys who are street-rodding '34's (aaargh!) and who may thus have drive trains for sale. And keep an eye out for such antique parts-oriented websites like Hemmings Motor News www.hemmings.com , restored classics http://restored-classics.com/carparts/page25.html , and the H.A.M.B. (for hotrodders) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/index.php? .

If you've already been down these avenues, please disregard!

You would have to qualify the statement that the Jet engine will fit. Whilst the rear engine mount is identical, the front mounts are not, and the engine block is longer than the 212. The exhaust would not be a problem, but you would have to use the Jet clutch and transmission as well, as these are completely different, as is the throwout linkage, and the drive shaft would have to be shortened considerably. So there would be a bit more engineering involved to use a 202. There is also the question of very hard-to-get engine parts for the Jet now. Bearing sets are difficult to obtain, and I know of no interchanges for these, without modification or machining.
