Splasher water jacket leaks

Anyone have a tried and true method for preventing a water jacket from leaking out from the bolt holes? I tried using permatex blue on the upper bolts, letting it sit overnight to cure and filling the radiator the next day and it still will leak out of the upper bolts. Any ideas? Thanks

Originally the bolts had brass flat washers underneath them. these, and a good coating of sealant should do the job. I have had excellent results with grey Loctite flange sealant. Expensive, but worth it. Can be bought in either small tube or large cartridge.

  • Go to the nearest MOPAR dealership and get some of the MOPAR ATV-RTV from their parts department. Its black in color and will seal up just about anything.

Its the only stuff that would seal up the intake gaskets on my twin turbo 5.0 Mustang I use to drag race. Everything else I tried would blow out at 22lbs

of boost but this stuff held up to over 30lbs.

Usually its about $9 a tube and a little goes a long, long way. I've never had

a engine leak any place I used this stuff at.

  • Thanks for the ideas, I will try the black aviation silicone the blue should have done the job but did not

    Thanks Chuck

Probably the greatest cause for leakage is the metal is mushroomed out on back side of holes from tightening bolts into cork gasket. Before you reinstall pan, flatten surface area from back side against a dolly. We use regular gasket shellac with no problems. :) (Same applies to oil and automatic transmission pans)

See Dave's comments above (I think he meant the water jacket) about making sure the bolt holes haven't mushroomed on the block side. Put a block of wood under the bolt holes and peen them flat. Put some emery cloth on a plank and sand the inner surface by rubbing the water jacket over the paper. Most importantly, get a correct new gasket from somebody like Dale Cooper (advertises in the WTN). All that + Permatex "Blue glue" should do the trick.

Chuck, all of the advise given are good possible solutions, the one thing I have to offer is to know that Silicone / RTV products are mostly made to use IN PLACE OF A GASKET, not with a gasket. These products when cured form rubber which can damage or 'move' cut gaskets, Especially cork, allowing for the potential of leaks.

Standard gsket sealers such as the aviation style products work well with cut (pre- made gastkets)

I normally use Permatex #2 because itstaays pliable and work well on bolt threads, plus easier to remove if you need to take it apart down the road.

Google Permatex.com , they have a good website that may help you with some of your question.

    Good Luck
