31 Super Six Engine Question

Hi all:

I am perplexed. Some techical sheets I've obtained for the 31 Super Six (Sedan) indicate that the cooling system was thermosiphon (only).

My engine looks pretty darn close to the pictures I've seen of a 31 engine with one major exception: I have a water pump.

When did they start putting water pumps in the 6 cylinder engines?

Also - does anyone have an alternative for a Carter Carburetor?

I currently have a Carter RB-6, which I can't seem to find any information about.

Would a Carter WA-1 work for the 31 engine (presuming mine is indeed a 31).

My problem is that I have no power when under load (i.e. accelerating or going up hill). Fuel pump seems fine (yes, I have an electric 6 volt).

Thanks in advance.

Eric

  • do you have heat? i thought they had the water pump with the heat option. i dont know what to expect for power but im not expecting to be overwelmed with the advertised 60hp. i have the original carb setup and it really looks like it can be a headache.

I understand that accessory After-market water pumps were available, but were not offered by Hudson. In my experience the thermo syphon system couldn't be beaten for efficiency and reliablility, buyt it is difficult to get heater to function unless it is the type with top and bottom header tanks, in which a breather tube from the top tank of the heater to the top tank of the radiator has to be fitted. Your original carburettor is a Marvel updraught, and they can be got to function perfectly with a bit of fiddling with the tension of the flapper spring and thje main jet size to suit modern fuel, but depending on the state of the die-cast body.
