I grew up in Saginaw and we would go to my grandmothers house near Detroit for every holiday. Hudsons used to hang what had to be the biggest U.S. Flag ever made, from the top of the building during the Thanksgiving parade (which I beleive they sponsored). We would then start our Christmas shopping in the store. I don't remember when the store closed, but it was very impressive in it's day

What? You could start Christmas shopping right after Thanksgiving. I remember those days when all the Christmas stuff was out and it seemed like the mains street came majically alive with lights and decorations the day after Thankgiving.

Now it is so commercialized the stuff is out in july. Kinda upsets me

    Ain't nothing sacred anymore.

Growing up near Hartford, CT, we had the G Fox Department store. The pictures remind me of that store. The top floor was the toy department. It was a real treat to go up there, especially around Christmas. Ah those were the days.

Today we have our Walmarts, Kohls and Targets. These stores have no class. The holiday sales start in July. They make their employees work on Thanksgiving day, while the executives stuff their faces with turkey.

Hotels, department stores, night clubs (saloons for those of you old enough to recall the term), restaurants, clothing, service (most anywhere you go) and, last but not least, automobiles. Ain't much of anything that has class nowadays.

Don't forget that Target (or Tar-jay if you want upscale) is a direct descendent of J. L. Hudson department stores. After the merger the Dayton-Hudson corporation, a successful muliti-million dollar corporation, moved with the times and showed what a midwest retailer could do nationwide. Target has done a nice job of positioning itself above Wal-Muck, and now ol' Sam Walton's lil' general store is having its problems...
