Bad Gas
Hi Hudson Dave here . I tought I would pass along a funny experience I had with my 46 com. I have been chassing little problems out of the car In hopes I t will be road worthy for the 2500 mi trip to the nationals .The thing I would like to sheer with you Is todays FUEL. I bought a good sending unit for the tank . Bench tested and It was good . IN the month I had the motor out to paint the firewall and the Inner fenders when I put the motor back in It ran terrible and In 5 min. It quiet running completely . The gas smelled like varnish after 4 weeks .I pulled the plugs and six of the eight plugs were foled .I siffened as much out I could then put five gal.of gas and two cans of Sea Fome Gas treatment to the tank .
problem solved . I though . After It's first trip out of the shop I notice the fuel gage was not working needles to say I said things gosh wiz rotten raser frats and mabe some other thing don't remember. I grounded the wire to the gage and It went to full . More bad words .The sending unit Is not hight on my list of things I would like to do more then once. After some work i got the thing out . and this brings me to the thing that blew me away the shinny sending unit I put In was BLACK like you took flat black paint and shot it two or three times .At this time I tryed to move the flot up and down it was frozen on 1/4 full . after lots of brk cleen W/D and a shot Marvel Mystery Oil it worked againYAAAAAAAAA.so my advice to al of you Is use Sea Fome gas treatment If you are going to be siting arond much. You're right about this one Dave !! Today's gas seems to go rotten in just a few weeks it seems !!
I always use a bit of fuel stabilizer in all the gas engines I have that sit around for any length of time, including my boat gas, snowblower, lawn mower, etc.
Boy, do I ever hate that stale gas smell when I forget to do this and open up the gas can a month later !!

This is just another way that our gov is allowing the gas or fuel NAZIS! to get away with something. other than way too high fuel prices the quality sucks.
and they are allowed? to make 225,000.00 a minute profits? come on people,we are sleeping and they know it. its time to wake up and bark...lol.
the real terrorists are the fuel brokers raping the American ( USA's ) economy in every derection we turn, WE NEED TO STOP THESE NAZIS FAST!0 -
Dave Did You Have The Tank Out And Have It Cleaned And Treated (sealed )if Not What Your Seeing Is All The Old Varnish Breaking Loose And Filing Things Up I Would Pull The Tank Take It To A Shop And Have It Cleaned Up Before I Would Drive A Car 2500 Miles This Would Be A Must Thing To Do!!

I was recently talking to a service station owner here in Sydney, she told me that modern fuel has a shelf life of under 2 months any longer than that and it is no good. We are lucky here in Aust as we get to use of vintage cars 12 months of the years so no problems there.
I had heaps of trouble with my lawn mower, would not run properly, I took it to a mower repair shop they told me the same thing, when your mower is not in use for any length of time drain the fuel tank every time., they make heaps of money after the winter season due to BAD fuel in the tank.

Hi Hudson Dave yes the tank was cleen and sealed0

Petrols used to be all made from medium volatility "fractions" as they are called in the oil industry, back when cars had unsealed fuel systems and carbys.
Today the oil companies put a lot more high and low volatility fractions into the petrol and still end up with the same overall medium volatility. This is OK for modern vehicles with sealed fuel systems.
Putting today's petrol into an old car with an open fuel system creates problems because the high end fractions readily evaporate out, leaving behind low volatilty fuel, ie hard to ignite fuel.0 -
Can't figure this out. We had gas in a 1950 unused for 3 years and it was still OK.0

@ gearhead,
what all this has to do with Nazis???
Our gas prices here in Europe are way higher than yours !!!
And one of the major reasons is that the US rafineries do not have enough production capacity to satisfy your market. So they are buying petrol in european rafineries, what makes our prices extraordinary high.
Back to the problem:
I had the same experience with a 1955 BMW motorcycle that was sitting over winter. Normally it always started up immedeately. But not this spring. Same reason as you already described. New petrol and it fired up, but only on one cylinder. It seems that the new gas is also more aggresive, because the lowest part of the main jet of the second cylinder was rotten away.0
