Google & Posting Paranoia
Google has a great feature...type in any listed telephone number, and chances are the person's name, address and a map link will appear. So, if you post your telephone number on this forum, anyone who would like to visit your garage and help themselves to whatever you've got stored there will have no trouble locating you.

That sounds great. Please leave your lights on for us. LOL0

For you, Dave, always...
The flip side, of course, is that if you see a car advertised in Hemmings, CL, etc., you can get info on its location and owner. It's getting harder and harder to get off the grid...:cool:0 -
List your cell number. Google can't track that...yet!0

Sam,
Thanks, I didn't want to stumble, fall and have to make a claim on your insurance while I was raiding your stash.
How about Royer's suggestion of using a cell phone number?0 -
He's right, and I'd always use my cell number when advertising in a magazine. I guess part of the point I was trying to make is this: do what you like with your own info, but be carefull when posting other people's numbers on this forum...:o0

Even without Google its pretty easy to find out this information. Google just makes it easier. I get around this by always giving out Dave's number in my ads.0

Only because it takes a court order at this time... but is can be done.0

You mean they've FINALY got telephone service in Alberta, S.?0 -
Unfortunately in my more naive days, my real email address was used on my website... still is... lately that email address has been used for all sorts of negative and irritating stuff. The days of anonymity are almost gone...0

It wouldn't be so scary if it wasn't for "BOTs"...robot programs employed by spammers which troll the net looking for info. :eek:0 -
Sam, we just got telephone service up here last week. Its a party line and I have to snowshoe to the general store to use it, so I prefer to give out Dave's number instead...LOL0

So, you're the one. You have to stop doing that. I keep getting calls from the Royal Mounties....something to do with you and a moose. :eek:0 -
You can block the Google feature - and, at my age, don't expect me to remember how I did it. It was quite a while ago.
However, that said, if you do ype in my phone number - (207) 985-4455 - it'll get you to the Chapter Info page on the HET club Chapter Information page. I should get that taken off, come to think of it - OH LEWIS!!!!!
My daughter did it about the same time I did - and it doesn't come up with an address for her.
And don't bother calling - I'm not there any more. My ex-wife will probably talk your ear off!!! hehehehehe

Anyone who wants to "reach out" to any car club member only needs to get a copy of the club's roster. Then, they can get your telephone number and, in some cases, your email address as well as where live and what you own.0

I'm not scared of that I got a nice fat insurance policy on mine and I'll get an even nicer Hudson than the one I got with the claim money. LOL Of course you can rely on the "big sky theory" Of anyone they could choose form thousands of numbers why would they pick yours?0

Tiime for another posting of my "Internet Security Secret". My email address is mmittge at comprime dot com. My phone number is three six zero seven four eight . . . . . Don't know why everyone fusses over all this- my method is easy, gets the info across, and is perfectly safe from the spammers.0

Sure, Dave. But your info in the roster is not as easily accessed by every scumbag in the world as is posting your vitals on the Internet. :cool:0 -

Sure, Sam. But just by trolling some car club chapter sites and getting free copies of a club's newsletter or magazine, scumbags can still get info for their nefarious activities.
Your safe for now, so don't worry. BTW, when I'm done raiding your garage, do you want me to turn the lights off?0 -

Maybe someone would get selected because they have what the bad guys want, they're conveniently located or an easy hit.0
