54 Hornet found. Parts only. Questions.

I just bought a 54 Hornet sedan thats been sitting for years. Doors and quarters unuseable, front fenders-maybe, glass looks good except windshield cracked. I have some questions.

The 308 and Hydro were supposedly recent rebuilds when the car was stored(abandoned) in the 60's. I need a hydro for my 51 Commodore 8.

1. Are they interchangeable?

2. What can I do to check the trans before installation?

3. Do the radiators interchange?

4. Does anyone need a (supposedly) good 308?

5. Stainless is complete, straight and shiny. If needed, let me know. Other parts too. I intend to pick some small parts, but want to salvage as much as possible for other Hudnuts. BJ in Newport, I think you have 54s-Do you need anything?

Thanks for your comments/suggestions, let me know if you need anything. I'm in East Tennessee, 50 miles west of Johnson City.

1954 also used a Borg Warner automatic transmission. Changing it is a much bigger job. If it is hydramatic and you change the transmission, I would also suggest switching the higher ratio rear end from the 54 that should be a 3.07. I would suggest dropping lower pan, cleaning filter and changing front and rear seals. I did same in one I installed in our 1951 and drove it 35,000 miles with no problems. This was with a 1952 hydramatic that sat since 1961.
  • For my 54 Hornet Sedan, do you have the stainless steel trim that goes around the rear window and attaches to the rubber? Also, I could be interested in a "good 308" for my 54 Hornet sedan. How much?

  • Thanks for all of the replies. My questions are answered. I'm bringing the car home Tuesday, and will be able to check the engine, at least superficially this weekend. The car appears to have all of the stainless in good condition, so I'll let you all know when I can confirm. I have no idea what a 308 is worth. Don't want to get rich, but don't want to give it away either. I'll research the situation and reply ASAP
