Firewall and floor pan finish/paint

After six hours of blasting my engine compartment and front suspension on what I was told was a 66,000 mile original car. The build up was so thick and old even a 300 degree steam cleaner had problems getting it off. This thing had more like 266,000 miles of build up. So while the 308 is getting machined I thought I would give it a good clean place to live. Now I am trying to figure out what is supposed to be where. Looks like a semi gloss black would be right for the frame and suspension. The firewall and floor seems a bit confusing. Seems to be a combination of pink and undercoating. I took a whole layer of paint off with the steam cleaner on the firewall and looks to be a pinkish tan primer. What should be where so I can put it back right?

Thanks,

The cars were primered with red oxide primer underneath (thin or bare in some spots) then the paint was applied on the firewall and exterior tub with overspray usually the only color you see on underneath portions of the car.

The firewall was painted just below the turndown to the front floor pans - this isn't a great picture but shows where the original paint ends and the primer begins...or rust here since the primer was thin or didn't hold.

Was there any factory undercoating? Was the firewal directly behind the engine body color or the red oxide? My car is some form of red so it is hard to tell. I don't think the color it is now is the original red. I have no idea what Hudson's 1954 red looks like.
  • rob, please give me your address and when you will be home, so i can pick up the manifold bill a.
  • Dan is correct, mine was painted the car's outside color on the firewall. The fenderwells were black on ine, but they haven't been stripped yet and the car was repainted on the outside, so I don't know if black is the original color for the engine compartment (other than the firewall).
