new 26 hudson owner needs help
I am new 1926 hudson coach owner with many questions on servicing this car. Do you know of anyone who has replaced there windows in there 26 Hudson coach. the local Historical Car Club here requires all cars to have safety glass in cars to take part in any of there events or tours they have, so I am going to replace all glass in my car. I will need to find out all information to replace rubbers, weatherstripping, around windows.Sizes ,lengths ect.
Is there anyone who can help me on this project. Is there kits or rubbers or glass any where?? What year did Hudson start installing safety glass in there cars?
other questions for servicing this car 1-- transmission oil capacity is 1 1/2 quarts does it matter what type of transmission oil ?? old cars different from new ? old oil heavier ?do you have to fill by lifting floor boards or is there another way. there should be two plugs to remove bottom to drain & upper as over flow I beleive ?
2-- type of oil for oil change 7 quarts of heavy duty 30 oil (I have read.)
3--Changed clutch with the 6 oz bottle of hudsonit ( thanks for info from many
4-- manul says fill distributor base with motor oil once a month / any type?
5-- universal joint fill with fibre grease any type ?
6--rear end fill with differential oil ? what type ?
7-- the many chassis oil cups keepers filled with motor oil by pump oil can, will any oil can work or is there a special one for this.?
8-- water pump grease what type.?(replaced pump packinging already still leaks some )
9 wheel bearings what type of grease ?

Hey Kim....You might want to go to a Yahoo message board, Hudson Super Six 1916-1929 They deal with the older Hudson cars there like yours and mine. I have a 1929 and have gotten lots of help there as well as here. Where abouts are you located ? I am in Southern Calif. Good luck, Ron0 -
Kim, Your responses indicated below:
First, where are you located? I know the Antique Auto Club of America (AACA) being the prime one in the U.S., doesn't require safety glass. Your '26 had a tempered windshield but plate glass side windows. My '29 was converted to safety glass all the way around many years ago, and I suspect either a good professional or a Hudson dealership did it, as all the logos are in the right places. Some of the weatherstrips can be had from K-GAP www.k-gap.com, others you will have to source elsewhere, try A&M Soffseal, Restoration supply co www.restorationstuff.com, or Metro weatherstripping.
1-- transmission oil capacity is 1 1/2 quarts does it matter what type of transmission oil ??
Use straight 140 weight gear oil or 85W-140, available at the parts store. The lower large plug on the transmission is the drain, and the top smaller pipe plug is the fill. Fill to the bottom of the plug level then reinstall the plug. This can be done under the car by attaching a rubber hose to the grease bottle.
2-- type of oil for oil change 7 quarts of heavy duty 30 oil (I have read.)
May take closer to 8 quarts on just a change, or 10 quarts if you remove the oil pan. The pan takes about 8 quarts and the splash tray located inside the pan takes 2 more. You can only drain out about 8 by removing the plug, and that is fine. At some point you may want to drop the pan and clean everything out in there, but wait on this for now until you get some more experience with the car.
4-- manul says fill distributor base with motor oil once a month / any type?
There is a oil cup on the distributor base, fill it with SAE 30 motor oil. You can also use this for other oil points and the oil cups on your chassis.
5-- universal joint fill with fibre grease any type ?
Fibre grease is not readily available; use good chassis grease in a grease gun, and you'll either need an Alemite cross-pin grease gun or an adapter for your modern Zerk-style gun (restorationstuff.com)
6--rear end fill with differential oil ? what type ?
I use the same SAE 140 or 85W-140 you use for the transmission.
7-- the many chassis oil cups keepers filled with motor oil by pump oil can, will any oil can work or is there a special one for this.?
Regular oil can will do, I like the kind with the flex neck on the end for getting into difficult places; if you're not showing your car you may want to change the oil cups to grease fittings as the oil cups will leak oil all over your floor - but if you do, store the oil cups in a safe place.
8-- water pump grease what type.?(replaced pump packinging already still leaks some )
If you did not lubricate the packing with anti-sieze when you put it in, take it back out and do it. Coat all sides of the packing with anti-sieze, put a dob on the shaft and one inside the gland nut. Also I recommend starting the motor with the gland nuts backed away, and use a piece of crocus cloth or 220 grit sandpaper and polish the shafts with the engine running. I use Lubriplate for the grease cup, again available from restorationstuff.com. Fill the grease cup and screw the top down until it oozes out.
9 wheel bearings what type of grease ?
Any good chassis or wheel bearing grease should do, I use Lucas Red moly base with anti-sieze in it.
Others may suggest alternatives to this, this is just my opinions and it will get you on the road safely and effectively. Back to work!0 -
james thank you it sounds like you know your eary hudsons, this will help me keep car on road ,as drive every day I get a break from work, not long trips yet but would like to ,once I feel better about the car.
