Carb Delima
I'm stumped..
I put a carb on my car the other day and got it adjusted to idle correctly and run smooth.... The choke is non functioning it is set at full open.. Well with the car running well I can shut it off and let it sit for an hour or two and it fires right back up when I go to restart it....
Here is the problem.. If it sits for much longer than a couple of hours the ONLY WAY I can start it is by priming it with some gas directly into the carb..It then fires right up and continues to re start again and again as long as it dosen't sit for much longer than a couple hours????
And ideas?? Why is it refusing to restart after sitting for a long period of time???
OK...got the starting fixed.. Now got a second problem... I drive the car for about a mile or so and it stops dead in it's tracks..Acts like it's out of gas or vapor lock.... I tow the car back home put it in the garage and let it sit for about 5 minutes and it STARTS back up.. It will run on level ground at idle forever, but when I drive it any distance it dies??
Fuel Pump?? I'm lost.. and it has done this with two different CARBS so it's not a Carb issue.....
THANKS,
TOM

Hi Tom,
problem is with the choke. Since you add gas to start the engine when its cold, you're making the mixture richer, same function as the choke assembly. The choke assembly is cutting off the air, nmaking the mixture richer. Once you get your choke working, you'll be fine.0 -
I think the choke is just clouding the real problem, I found plugged up jets when I rebuilt these carbs and I had the same problem you described. Flood the carb when cold and it starts but it starts fine when hot. Both my low speed jets were plugged, I kept thinking I had a vacuum leak. My carbs are 968S Carters and I also found out they have an extra check ball, thanks to Mars55 for tellling me about threads on this sight that addressed my problems and to the willingness of members of this list to help fellow Hudsonites I found out the 968S carb has an extra check ball on the low speed jet to help smooth out the idle.

It could be vapor lock, but it could also be a partially plugged fuel filter that allows enough gas to pass thru to maintain idle, but not enough to propell the car for any distance. This is a common symptom/cause with late model cars w/electric fuel pumps and EFI....it could be happening with yours.
ps...do you have an electric fuel pump? And, what year/model Hudson is it?0 -
I've had similiar problems.
Turned out to be fuel line leaks between the fuel pump and gas tank. Tiny little holes where the fuel line went through the crossmember just ahead of the passenger side rear wheel.
The tell-tale sign is having to pour gas into your carb to start and it kinda just dying out on the highway. Mine would act up on the highway and almost die going uphill.
Since you've had more than one carb on the car with the same exact symptoms, I'm gonna suggest checking out your fuel line.
