Marvel Heat Valve Needed

Hi all:

Regarding the Marvel V carburetor "system" that goes on the Essex (and otherwise)

I know it's a long shot ... but I figure I'd give it a try:

Does anyone have a spare valve mechanism that connect from the top of the heat exchanger (at the top of the carburetor) to the plate on the manifold?

I currently have the carburetor and the heat exchanger. I just need the final mechanism (and likely the internal valve itself that fits into the manifold).

As I said, I know it's a long shot, but perhaps someone has one around.

Thank you. Eric

    Hi Eric,

the part you are looking for is very hard to find. If it has holes in it those can be repaired by using JB Weld. They may also be repaired by weldiing , but caution a small hole thats visible will turn into a large one as its heated and welded on.

Eric you may try posting on Supersix blog on Yahoo also

Am posting to put this up on list again, Can anyone help?

You're not speaking of the steel heat tube that burns through from the heat, are you? If so, I'm told several fellows have replaced this with a stainless steel version.
  • Hi Jon and 29VIC:

It is difficult for me to describe the part, because I've only seen the connection in the illustrations in the owner's manual. I have yet to see an Essex other than my own in person! My hope is to get the car completed this fall and then test her/tune her for next Summer in Marlboro.

From what I can tell, it looks like there should be a mechanism of some sort that connects via two bolts into the very top of the X-manifold. The illustrations show that the mechanism can be adjusted to three settings depending on the outside temperature. The mechanism will route exhalation gases into the carburetor heat exchanger. At the top of my heat exchanger, I have a connection that looks like it would "connect" to a lever/rod that would also connect to this mechanism.

    Does this help?
  • By the way, if anyone has a close up picture of the top of the assembly (for a 29-31 Essex Marvel Carburetor Set Up) that would help tremendously.

    Hmmmm.....

How about a Marvel overhaul manual on-line...would that help? http://hudsonsuper6.tripod.com/marvel.pdf (A tip of the hat to Lewis Mendenhall)

You didn't mention the year of your Essex, but here is a helpful site on the 1929 models, with all sorts of interesting technical links (from whence commeth the above information): http://homepage.usask.ca/~lowey/essex/library/index.html

Alex Burr has a .pdf of the Marvel Book. Buy the CD, its a good price @$10..

    Alex posts here often.
  • its just a shaft with a bellcrank kind of deal on one end and a flap inside the manifold, i would think you could go to a machine shop and have one made up. have them press in some oilite bushings for the shaft maybe. know anyone with a lathe? ill try to take some pics of mine and send them to you. i have another one but it was obviously frozen, from rust and some one forced it and broke it, is not salvagelable.
