Diesel hudson pickup

Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has seen a Hudson pickup (46-47) with a transplanted diesel engine. Maybe a 6 cyl cummins? How would the weight compare to the stock engine? If too heavy, maybe a cummins 4bt like found in bread trucks or small delivery trucks. Id like to use my truck to tow a 14 foot enclosed trailer, but don't want to go the sbc route. No offense to those who have, just not my 1st choice. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • That's my dream truck... The one with the 6cyl cummins turbo diesel. I want to use it to haul all my KGAP stuff as well as my race car.
  • The 6BT Cummins is VERY heavy, at over a thousand pounds. The 4BT would be a better choice and fit for the Hudson. You might also consider the BMW Diesel used in the 5-series, and also used in the Lincoln Marks in the early '90s. Another good choice would be an Isuzu Diesel in the older Chevy LUV and Isuzu pickups. The M-B six-cylinder Diesel in the late '80s big Benzes would be another. All are easy to maintain, find parts for, and convert easily to run on bio-diesel fuels!
  • Thanks for all the responses. I was unsure about the weight issue, but love those inline 6 diesels. I drove one for a couple of weeks when my work truck was in the shop. So much torque, and it was totally stock. Also they are easy to modify. I just want to use my truck as a driver for work. I have two young kids, and the truck has a small cab already, but good enough for me. I am also working on a 51 pacemaker for the family outings. If anyone has some more ideas for my set up let me know. I need to be able to tow about 4000 lbs on a daily basis, and also must have a/c. (very hot here in FL) My trailer has electric brakes and is a tandem axle. Love to see these old cars in use, and not in the garage. Thanks again for the input.

This is also very intesting to me. I recently bought a 47 pickup with a sbc. I'm not a big fan of the sbc either, but I plan to use it as long as it is sound. I bought the truck to be my daily driver, but probably won't get to it for awhile.

I don't have towing needs, but was thinking about a late model fuel injected V6 with a 5 speed to get decent economy.

  • Ive had several diesl trucks, mostly fords. The mileage is good for what they are capable of. I like all the things others dont, the noise, the smell, the torque.I think this is the set up for me, now just how to pay for it
  • hey guys check out the older perkins diesel applications---in the 60's there were a bunch of them pushing street sweepers----i had one in a dodge C600 1 1/2 ton flatbed (stock equipment)and it ran like a gazelle
there was a guy in tennessee about 20 years ago running a perkins in a 51 chev 2d sedanette---i dont know if it was the same size motor as in my dodge
also in the same time span perkins had numerous marine applications (different sizes)out there----bob

Look at the new GM 4200 I6 which is 290 HP.
  • what about the toyota 6 cylinder turbo diesels. they have one that is 4.5litres (roughly 270ci)
  • You want one that is not electrnically controlled. Most Diesels from the late '90s on are such, and are difficult to apply in a non-stock configuration.
  • What vehicles are these engines found in? (the toyota ones)

    thanks for the help,

    Don

back to it. toyota diesels are most commonly found in landcruisers. there is a few evolutions over the years from around 245 ci upwards, turbo and non turbo. if you want one without a transfer case on the trans, look for a coaster bus or dyna truck (forerunner to the hino dutro)
