No acceleration

I have a friend who has a problem with his car (a 1940 X MODEL FLATHEAD 8)...... It runs fine at low speed but as he attempts to accelerate in any gear it simply will not speed up ..

He is unable to accelerate beyond about 30 Mph in any gear... It acts as tho the engine had a governor on it.

This problem surfaced soon after his car had a sever overheating problem that has been corrected

Thoughts and suggestions??

  • Is the accelerator pump gone in the carb? without it you just have the low speed circuit.

accelerator pump appears to be Ok..How do you check it to be sure
  • When looking into the throat of the carb while you depress the gas pedal, or move linkage, you'll see a shot of gas if the accelerator pump is working.

you might check the function of the vacuum advance as the symptoms you've mentioned can be caused by that not operating correctly.
  • BHG?

    do a compression check...

What kind of car is it? Modern or old? If it's a modern or computerized, it could need the computer "rebooted".

If it's an older car, pull the distributor and check the mechanical (centrifugal) advance mechanism. It's hard to believe, but if it's stuck and not advancing, it can cause exactly the behavior you've described. My brother's former '37 H8 had that problem, and a rusted and stuck distributor advance was the problem.
  • Try droping the exhaust pipe off the manifold, had a 2 year old Mustang come in had the same problem, the muffler had collapased on the inside, would'nt go over 20mph!

I assume you're referring to the catalytic converter.
