How many gaskets.

I was replacing the air filter on my '53 Hornet today, and noticed a bit of movement between the carburettor float bowl and the throttle assembly. the four cheese-head screws that hold this on were all loose. I managed to tighten them up with an angle screwdriver, and they were quite loose. There are two gaskets on my carb. Is this correct? These are not the gasket stack between the carb and manifold, but between the diecast bowl assembly and the cast iron butterfly body. there was obviously some air leakage , as I had to re-adjust the idling.

Geoff,if I understand what you are describing correctly, the base is cast iron and the body of the carb.is diecast. It has 3 round washer gaskets and a separate gasket around the throttle plates. It is not uncommon for this to be warped,so I think that extra gaskets were used to help the carb from having an air leak.I think it gets warped because of design. It pulls down from the outside and pulls the outside ears of the body down before it compresses the gaskets, thus causing the air leak.In the past,I have very cafefully, filed down the ears to the body slightly to let the two pieces mate better. When rebuilding the carb,I lock tight them after I have checked the mating surfaces and am satisfied with this mating.Hope this helps.:)
