Year of Manufacture Plates

My friend Ed Burton, long-time HET Club Member and licence plate dealer/collector, sent me a rare 1940 NM licence plate, and I was able to register my car with it. Thanks, Ed!! This is a rare plate because there were way less than a million people in New Mexico in 1940, and many had trucks, which is a different plate. Also, it is the 400th aniversary of Europeans arriving in the area.

Looks nice on the black car. If you have a YOM plate on your car, I'd love to see a photo of it.

Don't have a photo (its ugly, anyhow- natural aluminum color with green letters), but I may have one of the few YOM plates that- isn't! Its a 1947 Washington plate on my '48, and its perfectly legal. Washington didn't make any plates in 1948, nor had the little year update tags been invented yet. They issued a window sticker in '48. The State Patrol put an end to that, because they couldn't give as many tickets for expired plates- they couldn't see the sticker at night. I was surprised at how many old guys pointed out my "mistake" at car shows. EVERYBODY has YOM plates in Washington- $25 one time fee, no renewals, and "limited pleasure driving" is permitted. I've never heard of anyone being hassled about the definition of "limited".
  • Wish it were that way in Oklahoma. You have to pay $13.50 annually to run the YOM tag, PLUS you have to pay 23.50 per year for your regular tag,. since YOM tags are treated like personalized plates by the State. So, here, you have to pay a total of $47.50 annually to run YOM. Oklahoma never met a fee or tax it didn't like. The one-time registration fee was suggested to the Legislature, and it was literally laughed out of the State Capitol building.

I guess Washington has a pretty strong "old car" lobby. In every other way, they nail us whenever possible (to record a real estate document has increased from $8 to $40 for the first page in the past 10 years). Oregon doesn't allow "pleasure driving" on YOM plates- you have to be on your way to, or returning from, a show or run. Guy was ticketed because he was driving his car to the repair shop- the cop said he should have trailered it.
  • Texas allows Hobbiests to register thier 25 year or older car for three years for ~$75. The car is restricted to use for shows, ralleys and non commercial or personal transportation purposes. The YOM plate can be subbed for the normal antique plate. When the YOM plate is used TX issues a small corner tab that shows the date of registration expiration. If the YOM required two plates both must be displayed. They YOM plate is inspected by TDOT before approved for use. Texas also exempts the vehicle from the normal $13 per annum vehicle inspection and you do not have to have a windshield sticker.

The picture shown is of my 53 Wasp displaying 53 Texas plates.

  • Also, in OK with YOM, there is a small windshield decal for the current year which says you have actually registered with the YOM tag(s). If that is not present, you can get a ticket for running an expired (!) plate!

Finding a pair of '37 Oklahoma tags was a real pain! I'd got sniped on at least four pair on ebay (one set sold for $125.00!), but these I found at an Oklahoma auto swap meet last year. I will register them next year (price is the same whether you do it in Jan or Dec, no pro-rationing!) so it'll be good to go. The tags I found are nearly perfect and unrestored, too!

Cool thread. These plates were found nailed over rat holes in my grandparent's back shed where the horse feed was kept.

The other pic is Don Lamb, Oswego, NY and my cars at Uncle Josh's meet in July 07. We believe they are the only two 36 sedans on the road in NY state, both with vintage plates.
