Speakin of automatic chokes

Since the subject of automatic chokes was brought up tonight in regards to headers I thought it might be a good time to ask my question. Eventually my transmission will be repaired and I will once again have the Hash in my care. One thing I noticed when I was fixing the vacuum leaks and test running the car was that I never knew if the chokes were working. I could set them closed but I never thought they opened when the car warmed up. I could set them open but they didn't close when the car cooled. The riser tubes are in and insulated and the springs have tension but I don't think they are doing what they are supposed to do. How do I test them? Is it easier to just put on manual chokes? Am I missing something in setting them up. My memory seems to tell me I used to set the choke cold to just be closed them as they warmed they opened, if they didn't open enough I think I would then adjust them to full open when hot and they would then be set. The problem with my memory is it isn't as good as I think it should be so it's better to trust the experts instead of a 58 year old brain. It's like I'm learning this stuff all over again.

  • Nothing wrong with the B , Harry. You may have missed checking that all passages are not full of carbon,tubes and the little hole in the spring houseing blocking the heat from getting to the spring. And that the choke weight moves freely. Your set method is OK so it must be either blockage or shafts binding or the adjustment of your fast idle screw, it has to be set also.
  • I blew through the tubes so I know they are open but it's possible the hole in the spring housing is blocked. I'll check that then the car comes home.

    There is a small vacuum hole in the carb that pulls vacuum in the choke housing. If it is clogged, no vacuum to pull the warmed air in. Make sure it's clear also.
  • Super Dave;

    won't that create a vacuum leak? I didn't think the choke housing was vacuum tight. If it is supposed to be then that may be part of my problem.
