Does anyone have an idea about the interior ? Is that a Hornet Special ?

Has anyone ever dealt with these people before? I've never seen so many ultra low mileage cars in one place in my life. Must be a lot of little old ladies in tennis shoes running around in low mileage cars.

Harry54 - It's got Hornet trim on the outside, but the seat bolster is definately from a Hornet Special - the color blue on dash and steering wheel seems a little off to me too. Kinda makes you wonder about that low milage claim, doen't it?

This is not a Hornet Special. It's beautiful though. The steering wheel looks a little too blue. Perhaps it was just the lighting from the flash. $30K... ouch

I just looked at the front bumper and that's definately from the Special. I also looked a little more closely at the fabric of the seats and the doors. Not your standard Hornet. Perhaps it was redone.
  • I have both a Hornet and a Hornet Special, and can see no diffrence in the grills. It looks to me as if the car is a Hornet, on the outside and a Special on the inside. The seat bolster does appear to be Hornet Special and if you look at the right door in the picture of the steering wheel, there is no Hornet badge below the vent window. The lack of the Badge indicates it may be a Special, but the colors shown are nothing I have ever seen. Except for the seat and door panels which appear to be original.
If it was one of the last '54's produced, it could be a Hornet with the wasp interior but Hornet trim on the outside. I once spoke to a man that worked at the Hudson factory until the fall of '54 and he said that they were using whatever they had on hand to trim the cars because they did not want any stock left over because of the body style change in '55.
I don't think (but I could be wrong) that any Specials left the factory with power steering, and brakes.

It's definatley not a Special on the outside. The interior is hard to say with what little they show. Can't see the glove compartment or if the ven windows are crank or friction. I do have a question the the Twin H air cleaners. What units came with the element closed on the front and open on the top like this picture. Mine are open all the way around.
  • 42,000 miles. how many trips round the clock do you think it has done? thats about how many mine has on it, you think its genuine too? HA! no way

I was told mine had 66,000 original miles. More like 266,000.

I'm pretty sure that the interior is from a Special. I'm guessing that this car was originally a Hornet special that had the extra stainless added on the outside to look like a Hornet.....
  • It probably is a Hornet Special. It doesn't have the trim around the Windshield that a Hornet has.

BJ TN - My dad purchased new 1954 Hornets from Hudson well into March and April of 1955, and every one of the cars had the proper interior that was available as early as August 1953. There were no noticable differences in the early or the very late production 1954 Hudsons. True, some of them had chrome plated grills rear trim above the bumper rather than the Stainless Steel of the early cars, but I can't remember seeing any major differences in interior trims, or exterior appointments.

The voice of reason from down-under. :D It "looks" like a nice car though. But for $30,000.00, everything on the car better be correct, new or as new.

It has Hornet exterior trim that is missing the stainless trim on the roof above the doors and missing the trim above the windshield. It has Hornet bumper guards (not the Wasp/Hornet Special bumper guards), but has an extra set on the outer ends. It has the Super Wasp/Hornet Special seats and door panels. I don't know what color of blue the steering wheel and dash is. Maybe just weird lighting. The "Hornet" emblem on the left front fender belongs on the right fender. I would guess that it's a Hornet Special with senior Hornet exterior trim, although it does appear to have opening rear vent wings. People usually try to upgrade to the next model, not the opposite.

    Shifter knob is not Hornet
  • I contacted the seller. He says it is a 7D serial number.

  • No "Special" insignia after the "Hornet" on the fender. I'd say - NOT a Special.

Nice car, whatever it may be.
  • This is now on ebay with no reserve. Ad says paint is original which it obviously isn't. Check out the green around the VIN Tag.

That green looks to be a reflection coming from the grass, trees, etc (some of the reflection is also on the vin tag). Cars almost always look better in pictures than from 5 feet, but look at the reflections on the paint (and black paint shows every flaw there is). It looks pretty straight.
Passenger side Hornet emblem should be on the drivers side...can't see the drivers side to see if that is the right one or not, though.
Perhaps someone painted the shifter knobs and steering wheel when they painted the dash? Looks like a brighter version of broadway blue.
Pretty car, though. Even for a four door.

"black sapphire metallic" is not an original color. No metallic in factory black.
  • Reflection? your kidding right. The light was hitting the paint in such a way that it reflected on the small edge near the vin and nowhere in the surrounding paint. This car has been repainted as has the interior of this car. And as stated multiple times this is not a Hudson paint job. I have Hudson paint chips from 1930-54 and do not see this colour anywhere. What I do know is a lot of 54's were painted green like this car probably was.

Also that is not a Hornet shifter knob. Looks to be from a Wasp. On each side of the car the Hornet should tilt towards the front. On the passenger side it tilts back meaning its a driver side badge on the passenger side as well.
  • IMO, the green coloration mentioned is too sporadic to be reflections. Obviously, the seller is misinformed regarding many aspects of this car.
  • I downloaded the pic and blew up the area its definetly the green paint showing through...
  • I'd rather see sellers and their agents post pictures and encourage inspection of the car. To make assertions regarding conditions which cannot be substantiated is asking for litigation.

According to vin number, this car was built in Nov. 1953, long before the 6D Hornet Special was available. Therefore, I'd say it's conclusive that the interior has been redone in material similar to what was used on the "Special" series, which included the necessary repaint to blue (if the car was originally green). The metalic black exterior is a definate give-a-way that the car was repainted

If It's Officially A Hornet , Then Why Do You Think It's Missing The Stainless Trim Above The Windshield ? ALSO , WHY DOES IT HAVE A WASP SHIFTER KNOB ?
  • I think the owner may have put the car together with what ever he could find. Still a nice car. Ad should not make any claims just say nice Hornet sedan for sale.
  • Exactly. People have been sued for much less, so why risk making a mistatement that can be used against you. This reminds me of a local Realtor who represented that hardwood flooring existed under carpeting in a house she was selling. When the floors turned out to be plywood, guess who had to buy the new owners hardwood floors.
