Need a Trans Shop

I am looking for a good Tranmission shop for my 53 hydro. This is a new restoration and I am getting the bugs out. The trans shifts very quickly through the gears and the engine lugs along. I am talking 4th gear in 1.5 car lengths from getting a cross an intersection. It is not the rod adjustment and I have confirmed this with Bill A. So where is a good place in Southern California? I am in La Verne. I had a shop in mind to go to but it took me so long to get the beast on the road the guy retired...... yes, all the gears work with manually shifting, but that seems silly with an auto...

Thanks Jay

  • Jay;

    I just had Fred Sr from Automatic Transmission Service in San Bernardino, 909-884-4851 do my hydra matic, he's been a great guy to deal with, went through everything and did what needed to be done but didn't fi things that didn't need fixing, though he could have, in the process he fixed the pinion seal on the rear end, fixed a leak on the diff cover, dug up some parts that needed replacing but the parts stores didn't have and took my calls everytime I called to see how things were going. He is an expert on old tranny's. I talked with him on Friday and he told me the car was basically finished but he wanted to keep it a couple of days more to adjust the shift points. I pick it up tomorrow, I'll let you know what I think but from the way Fred has been so far I have no doubt the trans will be perfect.

  • The problem could be that the throttle lever inside the trans has come unstaked and is now out of proper orientation. When you push down on gas pedal linkage should move , pulls throttle valve lever on side of trans forward. tv lever is the outside of the two levers on drivers side of trans. It can be fixed in car but valve body under side cover must be removed. A new/used tv lever procured. I would suggest welding the internal lever to the shaft, this is /was done on cars being drag raced to keep them from coming unstaked. Good Luck Lou Cote

    You can call my friend Tim at Tim's Transmission Service in Norwalk. 562-402-9111. I have known him for over 20 years and there isn't a trans he hasn't done. My 54 is actually at his shop right now. He is helping me get the new motor in it. Of course he is doing my trans while we are at it. He also has a 41 Cadillac in there he is doing a trans on.

    Lou,

    That is exactly the problem Edgar at Bill's place thought it might be. I may have a line on a place in Azusa. Thanks for the help.

    Careful on what Edgar tells you. You won't belive what I went through on a starter he guaranteed would work in my car. Bill reimbursed me but the time and hassle wasn't much fun.

    that was my first thought also, I had that problem 15 or so years ago. it was eratic, as the arm would slip and grab. so you could make an adjustment think it was better then loose it again. once diagnosed, a quick peening on the bench and its been fine since.
  • Okay, picked up the Hash today, the trans works great, everything is tight, no leaks of any kind and neutral is once again neutral, instead of maybe neutral. Filled the tank for the first time and I have a gas leak at the top of the tank, must be the filler hose. Drove it home, about twenty miles, the carbs still need adjusting but there was no over heating, the brakes work great, the trans shifts through the gears and the trip was totally uneventful. This was the first time I have actually driven the car on the road so I was a bit nervous. Now I need to get down to the tedious chores like fixing lights and turn signals, getting the carbs balanced, replacing the hood springs, all the stuff I should have done while it wasn't running, I wonder why I didn't get to that stuff then? Anyway, I R now a Hudson driver.

    The shop in Azusa took it for a test drive an adjustment and another test drive and everyone agrees it is the throttle lever in the trans. New gaskets on order and away we go. Thanks for the comments. Yea I take Edgar with a grain of salt at times.

    You learn to take Bill with a grain of salt at times too. ;)
  • ESPECIALLY WHEN HE LOANS YOU A PART TO GET YOUR CAR ON THE ROAD, AND THEN HAS TO DRIVE TO YOUR PLACE TO RETRIEVE IT MONTHS LATER, bill albright
