Help.. I have a friend whose car runs fine in all 3 gears unless he tries to accelerate beyond about 30 MPH then it acts just like it had a governor on it and will NOT run up past this speed..

Any thoughts or ideas??

Past 30 mph in third? Past 30 mph in 2nd, also? Or a lower rate of speed?

When he tries to go past 30 what does it do -- die? Buck? Gasp? Wheeze?

Yup. I'll betcha the wire from the points to the distrubutor case has too big a crimp and is rubbing on the breaker plate.
  • Check Josh's idea first, if that's not it then drop the exhaust pipe off the manifold and wire it out of the way and try it. Mufflers and tailpipes can collapse inside and look o.k. on the outside.
  • What about retarded timing?
