Idling/ running problems

I recieved my carb kits for the '54 Twin H Hornet and istalled them. Other than not having to prime the carbs to start, I think I lost ground. When starting cold, engine starts and runs fairly smoothe....after the chokes cut back I can adjust the idle mixture screws and it will run great.....THEN, the warmer it gets, it starts sputtering, stumbling, and sometimes just cuts off. I've been through the carbs several times, and am beginning to think it's not carburation. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks Tommy

The first thing that comes to mind is vapor lock. Did you have this problem before you rebuilt the carbs? If rebuilding them did not change anything, it's time to look elsewhere. (Another "sputters when hot" possibility is a coil that's going bad...)

I went nutz trying to figure out why my car ehaved kind of like you are describing.. Came to find out that my heat riser was NOT opening and as the car warmed up the fuel was being vaporized.. You might want to check the Spring on the heat riser and make sure that it is operating properly

    Couple of other possibilities.

Look to see if too much gas is dribbling in the throat. If so, you may want to lower the float position 1/8 in per Geoff Clark to compensate for the lighter (lower specific gravity) of the new gas.

I got some bad rebuild kits where if I used the little wire snapped around the needle valve and hooked to the float, the wire bottomed out on the valve seat and wouldn't let the needle valve close. I had to discard it.

Also, I had to open my WA1 idle screws up to 3 1/2 turns to get it to idle. Way more than the 1 1/2 +-spec.

Hopefully is isn't sucking air as the intake manifold heats up and moves, which would require a new gasket.

You may be able to learn something with a vacuum gauge.

Good luck and update us when you find it.
  • A new condensor and coil from NAPA seems to have done the trick. I've never seen a condensor like that before, instead of a wire it has a wide copper strap and a piece of insulation. Anyway, it's running MUCH better....wen't for a 3 or 4 mile ride with no problems at all....and attracted a small crowd at the SHEETZ gas station. This is a very cool car!
  • Oh yeah, I'm so excited about my car I forgot to thank all that posted.

    Thank you, Tommy T
  • I Had To Tune Up My Dad's 54 Twin H,i Put In New Spark Plugs And Cleaned The Points.tried To Start The Car And It Wouldn't Hit.found Out I Moved The Wire Going To To The Coil,it Was Shorting Out Where It Came Off The Firewall.you May Have Disturbed This Wire When Taking Off The Air Cleaners.reguardless,it Wouldn't Be A Bad Idea To Check It.
  • If You Are Driving Around Sat,my Brother And I Will Be At The Wings&wheels Car Show With The 54.it Is Between Between Saluda And Deltaville.you Turn Left On 3 Like Going To White Stone, the Air Field Is On The Left Before Bridge.we Will Be There From 10:oo Til Noon

Great, now you got me hungry for an MTO (a Sheetz sub/hoagie for those that aren't in the know)

No Sheetz'es out west...that's one of the things I miss from PA.

I'm glad your Hudson's on the road!
