My AMP light on the '54 Hornet stays on at idle and pulses as the RPM's increase. Anybody else experienced this? thanks, Tommy

    Tommy,

I had a similar problem on a 1969 Rambler - checked everything I could get my hands on, but couldn't find a thing. Battery never went dead - the idiot light would just burn most of the time, sometimes dim, sometimes bright.

I finally wound up taking every connector I could get a wrench or screwdriver on and cleaning them. Even took apart the connectors that slide onto a bayonette fitting.

After that, no problem. So I figured corrosion somewhere in one of the connectors.

By the way, I took the connectors apart under the hood one at a time.

  • I tried cleaning and tightening all the connections with no change. I guess it's time to pull the generator and check the brushes. When I purchased the car a few weeks ago, it already had an 8 volt battery in it....could that be the problem? I have ordered an Optima 6 volt battery and was waiting to see if it reacted any differently with the correct voltage. Thanks for the advice. 'Til next time, Tommy

Before you install the 6 volt Optima battery you will need to reset the regulator for 6 volt operation if it was adjusted for 8 volts.
  • You Might Check To See If You Have The Proper Fan Belt.the Original Belt Is Wider Than Normal Fan Belts.i Assume You Haven't Had This Car Very Long From Our Discusion About The Carbs.some People Would Try A Regular Belt But It Is To Narrow.also, you Have To Polarize The Voltage Regulator To The Battery.take A Wire And Hold One End On The Bat Terminal On The Voltage Regulator And The Other End Touch The Screw Head On The Arm Terminal To Create A Spark.caution Do Not Touch Fld Terminal Or Any Metal Parts.a Spark Is All You Need.if You Change Batteries, you Have To Do This.i Have The Optima Battery In My Car And My Dads.if You Drive It On A Regular Bases, its The Best Way To Go.batterys Plus Had The Best Deal I Could Find This Spring.it Might Save You From Replacing Lite Bulds And Such.lol
