Wally Parks, founder of Hot Rod Magazine and the NHRA, died last night at the age of 94. It was my priviledge to have worked for him for several years...he was a good friend, a great man, and the last of the founders of racing in the US...:(

Mr. Parks was of the generation that built what you see today - they were, and are, a breed apart.

Tho I never got into drag racing, other than a few wild Sat nights out on lonely back roads, I grew up in that era of home built, no bean counters and no real rule book racing.

I salute all those who came before whose like will never be seen again and who's legacy will be long remembered.

    Safe journey home, Mr. Parks.

Wally Parks was the first to start using abandoned air strips for drag racing- they decided on the quarter mile distance because most strips were about long enough for a 1/4 mile race and then enough distance left to get the car stopped before going off the end.
  • Wally will be greatly missed. His vision and drive to establish the NHRA should inspire others to continue his work.
