Hello Good People! I recently got a '28 essex coupe, such as it is, several pieces, and I need a door for the passenger side. I also am looking for a new door hinge for the driver's door. I suspect as things go along I will be needing a lot more, but that's the major thing for now. Thanks to Flateightcoupe for all the pictures and information on his project. Sure helps out a lot. oldrodder43 Perley

The door hinge for the '28 Essex Coupe is the same hinge as used on the front doors of both the 2 door & 4 door sedans. The sedan doors also fit the Coupe. I've got spares of both doors & hinges here in New Zealand but shipping costs are probably prohibitive. The series 2 1928 Essex Coupe is a great car - I've got 2 on the road!!

  • Dave, we have a 30 essex sedan, stripped and in process of building new chassis as the old one is bent and patched, the body has a bit of cancer, and wood work is completely shot with borers and looks like white ants.

We are looking into making it a 2 door, one of the things we are looking at is the door hinges, there must be a better design, they look like piano hinges.

Greig, The piano hinge analogy is a good one.My understanding is that the USA assembled Essex's had the factory piano hinge while the Aussie built one usually (always?) had separate upper & lower hinges. The piano hinge is VERY strong & doesn't wear. I've got a photo somewhere of a US Essex with the door at right angles to the car & a jack under the door lifting the side to show the hinge strength.

There is very little wood in the US Essexs, the roof structure & the rear window frame being the only wood above the wooden running boards. This is true for the closed on '28's the roadsters were different.

Most Essex chassis's that I've seen have been pretty good, sounds like your old one has taken quite a hammering. Couldn't you find an old one at the recent Toowoomba HET Nat meet? It's a lot of work to build one!

Good luck with the restoration - post some photos sometime.
