Ebay Declares: "Wasp NOT Like Hornet"

In what seems to me to be a silly and arbirtrary move, ebay cancelled my listing for my '52 Wasp coupe because I used the word "Like" in my title. They refered to it as "keyboard spamming". I'm irked with myself because I only added it as an afterthought, anyway. While many people list Essexes and parts without the word "Hudson", and some list Terraplanes and parts without the word "Hudson", I can't remember if I've ever seen the word "Hornet" without the word "Hudson" next to it. AMC Hornets, notwithstanding. In short the word "Hornet" just wasn't needed. Or, more to the point, the word "Like" wasn't needed. Further, I timed the listing to end a half hour before my other listing, the '53 Hornet, so that whoever bought the Wasp might then choose to buy the Hornet for the engine and other items.
I just don't know why they couldn't reject the listing initially or send me some sort of advisory that I needed to act upon. At least they refunded my charges. I know that I probably have no right to complain, I'm responsible for reading and following every little rule thay have. It's just that it's so tedious reading every little "faq" and tab and link and, etc.
I managed to save a draft copy of the listing. Without it, I don't think I'd have the energy to write all of that copy again. I'l be reposting it shortly.
I can't imagine that any of this is very interesting to any of you, but I've included a link to the page that they sent me advising me of all of the terms that can't be used in a title. I've seen many of them before, I just did'nt know that those listings were in violation and pending cancellation. I'm sorry if I've bored you with my "mini-rant".

Your listing deletion was probably computer generated. I'm sure eBay could care less that you compared the Wasp to the Hornet. They look for the "like" to get rid of bait and switch auctions that clog up categories with thousands of entries.0

I saw the Wasp coupe vanished - thought it went on a buy it now . Ebay can be a pain that way !!!0

I never doubted that it was snagged by a computer progarm. I'm iritated that they aren't capable of this type of flagging in the initial listing process. Besides, the whole underlying irony is: That a Wasp is like a Hornet!0 -
I have seen NOT used. So Hudson Wasp, not Hornet will probably get through the Spam filter.0

I would have thought so, I've seen it used a lot, too. But it's on the list of things that will get your listing canelled also.
The following is pretty much the heart of their message. I copied/pasted it from thier longer edict:
In addition, the following words and phrases are generally *not* permitted in the title because they will produce unsatisfactory search results for buyers looking for particular items:
- Like
- Style
- Not
- Inspired by
- Similar to
- Better than
- As worn by
- The brand name followed by a question mark -- for example, "Chanel?"
The following are examples of text that *is* permitted under eBay policy:
- "This vacuum cleaner does a better job of cleaning ground-in dirt than Acme brand vacuum cleaners."
- "These speakers are very comparable to the quality and sound produced by JBL."0 -
FWIW, I love that wasp coupe, if it were closer, me and hudsondad would be there with a trailer, taking it home. what a great car to come on ebay.0

Wasps have become my favorite stepdown. I didn't start out that way, they grow on you.
I love my rusty Super Wasp Coupe, dearly.0 -

How kind of you to say! I feel bad selling it, but I've lost too much time to bad health (a household mold infestation that took years to locate). I have to be realistic about what I take on and I do have a '50C8 sedan that was absolutely burdened with options from the day it was new that I'd love to be driving.
We all have different tastes, to be sure, but I, for one, just love the color combination that this Wasp came with. Who ever buys it will paint it whatever color they wish, though. I spoke to the original owner (the man who bought it new in Virginia in '52). He's alive and well living in Pahrump, Nevada. He's now ninety years old. He was delighted to hear from me when he found out that I ended up with his Wasp. The other Hudsons in his auction ten years ago were just ones that he and his son picked up, but this Wasp meant the world to him. After leaving the military he moved back to the Eau Claire, Wisconsin area and in time owned three different McDonalds. He was reputed to have retired a multi-millionaire. I have no douby that it's true. One of the bidders on the Wasp is clearly a lead sled man. It's hard to learn anything much about whose bidding on your items, but you can look at some of their recent purchases. In this case it was a lot of '49 - '50 Mercury custom stuff. To be honest, it scares the crap outa me to think of this cute little Hudson all nosed and decked and primed and scraping the ground! In time I'll let this forum know if that turns out to be the case. Maybe you guys would rather not know...
If I recall right you and your father live in Pennsylvania. How expensive is it to ship a car there from here in Minnesota? I sold a crummy rusty Subaru to a fellow in Tennese a couple of years ago on ebay. I got something like $350 for it and he paid $600 or so to ship it. (I know it's nuts, but it's a long story).0 -
Well, I screwed something else up! Now that the Wasp is back on ebay, I realize that I didn't request a particular start time. It will now end a lot later in the evening on the east coast than I would have wished. Or is it the west coast? Damn, I'm not good at this stuff..0

So I must applaud E-bay.:D
anyway, all in good fun, goodluck on your sales.0 -
nick s wrote:James, you are obviously in sales. Being an engineer in a small company, that tends not to say no to special orders, I constantly have obscure orders come through with "its exactly like the one at_________, except............." and there is ALWAYS an EXCEPT following close behind the "like"!!!!

Funny! And yes you're quite right. A lifetime in retail has made me the inadvertent sham-artist that I am.lol0 -
yeah, we're in eastern PA. Shipping the car would be killer.
FWIW, Hudsondad's wasp originally was the color combo your's is, but he reversed it. If I got this car, I would keep the original colors. If he were to weld the perimeter (which his had the same issue...) I would likely swap out the interior for his, which BTW, isn't that bad, but your's looks a bit nicer. I think the hard to find stuff is there, and with all of the 48-54 crap we got, any missing parts would be not so difficult. I think that even trim for the side wouldn't be terribly difficult, if I settled for okay used, but not NOS, if you know what I mean.
If times and circumstances (and $$$$)were different, I would really consider it. What I would do is likely take the side trim off, the stainless, to the porkchop, leave the wasp emblems, and look for the 6 side pieces. I would piece together a front end, get the correct guards, etc... get it running with the 262, and hydro, and just work on it, until it was a nice presentable driver. I think that for the last year (or more), this is one of the neatest cars to pop on eBay.
I hope it finds a great home, one that will appreciate it as much as I would. Unfortunately for me, being far away, and not having the funds to do mine and another car, keep me out of the hunt for it. I really hope it goes to someone that understands the car, and does make it stock once again.
best of luck!

Thank you for your kind and positive thoughts. Also, thank you for reminding me of the front bumper. I should have remembered that it was off of another model. Heck, the license plates are different from front to back. That horse collar around the license plate isn't correct for a Wasp. Apparently, if I understand the parts book correct, the guards that I hastily attached on the outer ends belong on either side of the plate, and either no guard, or a different larger guard gets mounted on the outside. Hudson kid, is that the way you understand it?0

here's the correct guards for a wasp....
hudsondad's car for an example....0 -
Geez, that does it, I'm gonna pull my listing now and keep it!!
Well, I wish, anyway. Your Dad's coupe adorable. Do you bug him about the Wasp being in his will?0 -

they all will end up with me someday. Might be the first way I ever get a stepdown coupe, which really is why I don't make it a terrible big deal.0 -
There's a thirty three thousand dollar Hornet on ebay at the moment. I can't get the pictures to load for me, but I can tell by the gallery photo that it's same color combo that we've been talking about.
