Terraplane carb help
I just finished washing and waxing the 37 Terraplane for a wedding Sat. Now it does not want to run unless the manual choke is pulled three forths shut ?
If i drive around the block with choke part closed it will run but when i open it it pukes out. I know the choke is working as i checked it. Is it possible my fuel pump is going bad or something in the carb. All helpis appreciated.
Thanks Chuck

I've never had this problem with my Terraplane, but....hmmmm....let me think:
Pulling the choke increases the proportion of gas to air, right? So, one guess is that you are suddenly getting too much 'air'. Could you have suddenly developed some sort of intake manifold leak? Has the vacuum tube to your wiper become detached? Do you hear any strange hissing sounds in your engine compartment (other than from the occasional cobra or black mamba, I mean....)?
Does the engine behave in this unfortunate way both when it is idling, and when it's driving down the road? If both, then I would tend not to suspect the fuel pump; if it's pumping less gas, the car would idle okay but would poop out at any kind of speed -- no matter how hard you pull the choke out.0 -
This is further proof that you should never wash and wax your car. (just kidding!!)
Seriously, another possibiltiy is a foreign object lodged in the carburetor restricting the main fuel circuit, thus leaning out the engine. Pulling the choke crudely restores the air/fuel mixture ratio, so the car will run.0 -
OK, you're not getting enough gas.
Check the screen in the fuel pump and change any other filters you have. Also, you may have some water in the gas.
Disconnect the line at the carb and pump a little in a cup and see if it separates. You can also see if you're getting a healthy squirt there or just a dribble.0 -
Thanks guys i knew i could count on you for ideas. Gas is fresh, put new fuel filter on no vaccum leaks I did try a new fuel pump i bought at the nationals not the problem I wonder if a piece of crud got in there somehow? Tommorow morning i will try a fresh rebuilt carb i have, I would hate to have to drive a FORD to pickup the bride and groom in. Anyone with any more ides please contribute. Thanks Chuck G.0

Was it running properly IMEDIATELY before you soaked it ? If it was I'd look for wet someplace, more choke would overcome it some but not smooth it out. Checked the air cleaner? Water in distributer cap?Wipe it dry/clean inside.0

Man am i disgusted. Put a new fuel pump on and a fresh rebuilt carb, set timing with timing light it was a little off. New fuel filter it idles and starts up right away does not pop or anything new plugs and wires, did not get wet or anything it will not rev up without sputtering and will not pull itself no hissing noises like a vacum leak etc. If valves were sticking wouldnt it be popping at the carb or tailpipe keep thinking guys .Looks like a 1964 ford galaxie will have to do instead of a Hudson! Also fuel pump spacer thickness is per book Thanks Chuck G0

Ken i went out to the shop and the condesor on the side of the distr. was loose tightened it up and still the same problem maybe i have a new cond laying around here to try. did hook up my r.p.m. gage and it will have a steady increase in fast idle speed up to about 1200 rpm before it starts sputtering out. thanks Chuck G.0

One more suggestion, have you checked the distributer spark advance ?0

It seems to work . I have to work sun. i might get to try a new condenser after work. will keep you guys informed thanks for the ideas they are real helpful. Thanks Chuck G.0

chuck, since i found your original post i offer the following. it could be a coincidence but i would suggest you exhaust all water contamination problems before you start to tinker with something else. water in the ignition system..distributor cap, ignition wires and conduit, condenser, and coil. water in the fuel..gas tank..carb. did you disconnect the fuel line at the carb (and taking the proper safety precautions), turn the engine over and check fuel pump output. when you checked for a vacuum leak did you use a vacuum gauge..fluid spray around the carb and intake system or what method? how do the points look? the gap? good luck. regards, tom0
