Just on the road, Our 40'

While I would classify this as a rat rod, I don't think that is a negative term these days. Some of the rods at "Goodguys" and "York Street Rods" that get the most attention are exactly either vintage unrestored or old skool newly built. While I can appreciate some $200,000 street rods, It's certainly refreshing to see something built (or a survivor) that may have come out of the 50s or 60s. One of my favorite cars at the national this year was that 36 or 37 Coupe that was driving around with the rusty patina body. I would NEVER put a coat of paint on that one! I'll bet this hudson gets lots more attention than the rows of 55-57 chevies and mustangs at car shows. It's your car so you can call it whatever you want!0

You can park this Hudson in my driveway anytime! I like it. t took a lot of time, thought, work and $$$$. But what a reward. If you are in Nevada anywhere, you are invited to join the Silver State Chapter of the HET Club. We need more members and participation as well as ideas for meets. Enjoy and take care of your ride. We actually live in Vegas. Nellis and Trop. We currently are still members of the grand canyon chapter. My wifes 49 4 door is almost ready for shows (frenched head lights and leaded in the rear quarter seems. My 40 just got some new teeth, a set of 55 corvette. wish I had the original grille, but bill is asking a bit much for my blood. My car and my wifes car can be seen most of the time at Sin City Chrome on renate dr. in china town. My wife owns the chrome shop and I own the hotrod shop.
By the way..... I didnt have to GET my wife to work on the car........ She is constantly bugging me to come out to the garage.
Also if you guys see a satin 49 4 door with frenched headlights, pink metal flake roof, and loud LOUD pipes............. Let her know what a *****en car it is...... she has done 90% of the work (including the lead work).0 -
I am 49hudson's wife and yes I do spend much of my time working on my car and helping work on his cars. I do hop this post dose not make everyone think I am a jerk but this is a topic I feel very strong about.
I just want to try to help clear up this "Rat Rod" thing. I too like many custom car people dislike my car being called a "Rat Rod" my car like my husband's '40 is a Custom Car. You all can even ask Jay as to my having more of an issue then 49hudson when less knowing people cal any of our cars "Rat Rods". Our cars are not yet finished yet we drive them most everyday. No person can fully build or restore any classic car in a weekend but we will still drive our cars day to day finished or not because we love our cars. To myself and many people a work in progress custom car being called a "Rat Rod" can be compared to calling it a "Jalopy". this is as best as I can explain it. So everyone can see true definitions to several common styles of classic car that you all have mentioned I pulled scanned copies straight from The Ultimate Hot Rod Dictionary this way we can all be on the same page.
Thank You All

once a proud hudson , now just a mess of different parts, bad welding and bad ideas. but hey its 'your car' most of us are thankfull of that. problem is if you ever wish to sell it . good luck0

2manyprojects...that is just mean spirited..shame on you.
If ya can't say nice things about someone elses ride...don't say anything at all.
How would you feel if someone insulted the work you did on your car?0 -
It seems some would rather see a Hudson scrapped than customized. Personally I like this car and if this is what this man wants for his personal car why would anyone critisize him? I think it would be narrow minded to expect everyone to return their car to stock when they want to express themselves otherwise. Nice car dude, got any pictures of your wife's 49.

Not sure why some folks have to come off negative, and worst of all make comments that have LITTLE or NO basis in fact.
I've watched this thread from the beginning, and although I found the car not to be 'my cup of tea' (so to speak), I observed from the pictures that there was and is a LOT of thought and high quality work (and probably a good share of blood & sweat) that went into it...
Overall, I am impressed by the work that has gone into this car, and admire the unique customization and ideas that have gone into it - I might even take some of the ideas and 'run with it' a bit myself!
Agreed. I'm glad to see some Hudson customs running around. I bet they get tons of attention everywhere they go. Wish I could say mine was driven daily...

faustmb, Jimalberta, Harry Hill thank you for the kind words it is a shame that some people feel the need to be cold, rude and mean spirited.
2manyprojects is very wrong the work on all of our cars is quality work and if he was ever to look at the car he would see that (if he knows what quality work is) and for his info we just had a guy make a very good offer on the car and decided to sell her for the sum of 15,000. We had not been looking to sell her but this guy fell in love with her and had to have her.
I don't ask everyone to like our cars but that is the point they are our cars and if we like them and enjoy driving them that that is what matters.
At least I can say my car is on the road and not locked away in the garage like some people we enjoy driving our cars isn't that what they were made for.
Harry you had asked to see some pics of my '49 I have some more from over the years in the member gallery. She still has much more work to do but I put that on hold during car show season and I will not let my husband work on her without me. She will be full painted after I finish her body work and that takes time not to mention she has NO BONDO anywhere on her all and any body fill she has is lead. I am taking my time with her and will not ever have anyone but myself my husband and our kids work on my car she is a family car in every way. I can always say I built my car and have it be true. I take pride in that. Anyone can sign a check.0 -
Sssswwweeett. When I was in 2nd grade they sent us all to a brand new school and we had to pick the school colors. The boys all picked black and the girls picked pink so our school colors were pink and black. Your car is great. Thanks for sharing your pictures. My next Hudson will be a 49 so I'm always looking for what others are doing. Glad to see your husbands car did so well for you guys, keep up the good work.

Thank you Harry.
I will put up more pics of her soon after I get home from Iowa. I have much more work to get going on after I get home and can't wait. I think people will enjoy the final project when she is finished. I just don't wish to rush because I want to do things right.0 -
That car has really come along - sounds like you are getting your enjoyment from it!0

I'm sure you've crawled all over his car personally, and can point out all of these "bad welds" and his execution of "bad ideas", right? I seriously doubt he'd have trouble selling either car, it he so desired; but it sounds like he is having far more fun DRIVING them! And what are you driving, 2manyprojects??? We're just a little curious.
Try finishing one of yours. Lets see pics of YOUR car so we can "critique" it for you. I'm sure you're all over that, now, aren't you?:(
That's what I thought.:rolleyes:0 -
Not too surprised at some comments here (albeit one was too harsh IMHO): 1. This forum is typically not for customs / rat rods / etc. There is another forum for those cars. Also, a custom or modified car is going to be subjected to scrutney- not everyone likes some people's ideas or taste. Look at the "Durango" vehicle that has been on this forum. The builder thinks it is a piece of art. I would call it something else. I would also think that any customizer will understand that not all people will like their creation. As far as Rat Rods Vs Customs, etc, e-bay sellers, craigslist sellers, car dealers and many car show attendees will call any piece of garbage a "Rat Rod"in order to get someone to buy it. In my definition, a rat rod is a rod made out of old vintage and usable period equip and parts without the expense of new chome or paint etc. Not a welded together Sanford and Son scrap heap made from house hold items welded onto a rotted out piece of junk and then call it a "Rat Rod".
I'd rather see a Hudson turned into a custom than scrapped. Not all Hudsons are legitimately "rare". With that said, if a car is in a state of condition that "I" don't think is too far gone, then I think it is sin to butcher a rare and original car when it could be restored. I would certainly want to own a "good custom" or a "good rat rod", however I like original thank you.0 -
Jeeze guys, I think the everyone's getting to involved in what this man did with "his" car. Lots of work, to me pretty darned nice and a fine custom. I like his wife's 49 better but I'm a 49 nut so you can't put any weight in what I think. I think they both do nice work and I would drive either car.

I am sure glad it is his. Each of can do as they please with there cars and trucks. I like mine back to close original.0 -
Billy, that's the point. We each have our likes and dislikes but we can still appreciate the work someone puts into their car. My 55 is bone stock including the original paint job. I could paint it and make it look better but as it is the car has character. That doesn't mean though that I wouldn't drive a custom rod, I sure would if I had one and that 40 would be a great ride.

This was my very first thought when I saw this thread!! Way ta goh!!!:cool:0 -
First thing guys....
I ran the numbers on the car and it is a 42. Gave the numbers to bill albright and he said it was a 42.
next... thanx for all the great support for this car (for those who were adult enough to see the work and time that went into it).
I did this 42 because It was gonna be scraped....
I did this car the way I did it because its the way my grandfather would have done it.
The purests really like to harp on custom Hudson owners, but think about it this way. I am a member of the grand canyon HET and the second youngest member (my wife is the youngest) Most people didn't know what a Hudson was until Cars (the movie) came out. And they all still think if its a Hudson its a hornet. If I was from the original generation (when Hudson's were new) I would just be really happy that younger people still love the Hudson enough to buy them and build them. I like to go really fast.... hence the 327. I like the look of a severe chop on a 40's car (thanX grandpa). Its satin black because I haven't decided on the final color.
As far as me not liking the "rat Rod" comment....... Call one of my cars a rat rod in front of my grandpa..... and get ready for a lashing....... My grandfather has always told me that the best way to get into a fight when he was a kid was to call a guys cars a Rat Rod or a Jalopy. So the offense taken is learned. I don't care what the term has come to mean. To me it means a POS>>>>>> and I do take offense to that. this car has hundreds of hours in it and its not even finished. Its won awards already and been in 8 straight months of magazines.
I love Hudson's!!! always have and always will. One day (close your ears purest) I will have a 29-32 Hudson coupe hot rod.. I have been looking for a body for over 15 years. I have found a few, but they were to nice (at the time) to hot rod. I build the way my great grandfather , grand father, and dad thought me how. Its the only way I know how....
this is what I drive everyday now.
1918 willys...... I love the orphan cars.
but one day it will be a hudson coupe!!!!:D0 -
:)You both have fine looking "rides". In years past, many Hudsons were destroyed just because some people never saw the potential that Hudson's had to offer. Now, unfortunatley, some perfectionists or purists express some disspleasure when they see a modified Hudson. Do '49-'51 Mercury or Ford or tri five Chevie "purists" show the same disrespect when at a car show and see highly modified cars of their prefered make? Cars were made to be driven, an owner has the right to "have it thier way". Some people like "Rolls" but want reliablity and ease of mechanical parts, so they install GM engines, does that make it less of a fine car?
Our Hudson's are more than fifty years old and, yes some models are rare, but if we want to make our car show some individuality, it is okay. Sometimes we may want to update for more modern conviences.
What I am trying to say is enjoy our cars, the hobby, and share with each other, that way we all learn. Have fun cruisin. Arnie in Nevada0 -
A '42!!
I love '42 Hudsons! I know cause I own two. And, I think your cars are awesome. I'm one of those buys who builds both rods/customs and originals-yes you can have it both ways. Heck, I'm even working on a custom that I'm building to look as an original (that's for another thread).
Hey, as a side note-I married my wife 4 yrs ago for lots of reasons but because she loves my old cars sure was up there at the top of the list!!
Hey 49hudson, don't suppose you had any spare '42 Hudson trim left over just laying around in your way do ya? Hey, I gotta ask:D
Keep doin' what your doin'. It gives the rest of us something unique to look at!
