 I have a '49 super six that I purchased on ebay a few years ago to drive while I rebuilt my '49 Commodore. I have yet to put some good trouble free miles on this super six. It seems that I just keep putting money into it, then something else gives out. Had to buy a new battery today, put it in and no gas to the carburator, now to the parts store tomorow and pick up a AMC fuel pump and gaskets {how Many}?. I am beginging to believe that cars are like dogs at the shelter. Some you get along with and some you don't. Thanks for letting me ramble.

That's the way things go, especially if the car sits for any period of time. It might help to go through all the main systems and do some preventive maintenance up front to try to avoid waiting for these things to fail (belts, battery cables, brakes, service generator starter etc). It took a while for me to get the kinks worked out of my Pacemaker, and it only sat for 5 years.
I used the AMC fuel pump, and just put the factory gastket stack back in. You will need to make a new steel line as well as grind out some clearance in the top of the factory gasket stack. I bought a 20" steel line with fittings and cut it in half. That gave me a "practice" line to work on getting the bend just right.
Have fun,

Thanks Mat for the encouraging message. I know this car had had a lot done to it prior to an owners passing in the '70s. Then it apparantly satfor the better part of thirty years or more. I will just have to keep getting the bugs out. It is tough to buy a car sight unseen. Pictures and realityare two different things.

I'm not one to suggest too much, I let the experts do that, however about 10 years ago I went to a Hudson meet and a fellow had a 54 Hornet Convertable (beautiful car) that only had an electric fuel pump. The owner said he was tired of the GM fuel pump frequently failing. My fuel pump failed several years ago and now I only have an electric fuel pump (and a spare one in the trunk). The only problem I had was I stupidly let the gas level get too low and the pump didn't have gas flowing through it therefore the pump failed. My pumps are Purolater pro #12s universal electronic fuel pump, it is rated for 4-7 psi. I bought one at Pep boys and the other at Advance auto parts. This pump has worked well for about 8 years and the car seems to run much better with it, probably the mechanical pump was weak when I bought the car. Also I change the flexable gas line every year along with the fuel filter.0

I mounted mine near the gas tank, I cleaned a spot on the trunk where the gas line runs, had to cut the gas line by about 6 inches and used flexable hose to connect to steel gas line. The previous owner of my Hornet had mounted his electric fuel pump in the engine compartment, bad idea, it never worked because the engine heat fryed the bellows inside the pump. I have been told by other car guys that it is not a good idea to put the pump in the engine compartment because of the heat. I just had to make sure the pump was properly grounded and ran a wire from the power with the key on and now it's great. Starts really well runs well, just don't go over 7 psi on your pump, I believe the mechanical pump was 4 psi and the electric vary's from 4-7 psi. If you look on Ken Cate's web site they suggest a BW pump and also Walbro sells them and Rock Auto. Do a search on 'electric fuel pump' on this site, it has the catalog number of the Rock Auto fuel pump. hope this long winded reply helps.0
