Vega steering Box

I've got Mustang II manual rack and pinion steering in my 34 Hudson Coupe. I've been told a vega steering box would improve the handling (easier to steer). Is it worth the extra money? Thanks, Walt

Walt, I doubt the Vega box would be worth the trouble. Since your fortunate to already have the popular Mustang R&P set-up, I suggest upgrading to a power Unit then add the pump & hoses.
I am in process of installing power r&p on my straight axle '37 Terraplane.
Good luck, Chuck0 -
Walt,
Been there! Done that!
Need a little more information. What engine are you using? What Mustang II suspension is in the car? Is it a kit or something cut out of an older Mustang?
My experience is that I have a Mustang II suspension from Fatman Fabrications with the power rack in my '47 Ford street rod. I am using a SB Chevy engine with the stock Chevy PS pump. It is VERY sensitive to steer. The problem with it being so sensitive is the high pressure from the Chev PS pump which is more pressure than the OEM Ford PS pump. They make restrictors for the Chevy pump though. Actually I am a little uncomfortable with the ease of steering. I prefer something a little more "feel" to it.
Peace,

tHe output pressure on the GM Saginaw pump can be lowered by shortening (getting a shorter, or grinding) the spring. You need to remove the 15/16 nut that the pressure line connects to. A spring and check valve will come out. A quick trip to the hardware store will get you a few springs with less compression pressure. This should be a decent start on a cure. There isn't a better, more reliable or more versatile pump ever made than the simple gearotation saginW!

Chaz, I've got an older Mustang II front clip with a 350 SB. The steering is tight and fairly responsive while moving, but as you probably know, you have to strong arm it when sitting still. Thanks for the responses guys! Walt:D0
