53 engine is red

I have read several posts that say that the 53 engine color is gold and the 54 is red. My 53 has a red engine. The car is pretty much original so I think this is the original engine. The seriel numbers of the car indicate that it was built in late 1953. Is it possible that they made the change from gold to red during the late part of the 53 model run or is there some other explanation?

  • Hi Ed.---If for some reason your engine was replaced with a new factory one, then it could have been red. I know of a new factory straight 8 engine for a 49 that came through red instead of aluminum color.---Cliff Minard.

I checked the number on the block; it matches. 251974. Out of curiosity, I looked up seriel numbers in "Hudson Tech". Apparently mine was built in May 1953. There were 49,057 53 Hornets built before mine and 17,085 built after.

If anyone has a 53 Hornet with a number after 251974, is your engine red or gold?

P.S. I must have too much time on my hands after the weather gets cold.
