A quick way to prime the lines to the pump is to get a rag and a compressed air nozzle. Put some pressure in the tank (Don't overdo it!!!!) Maybe loosen a line at the carb and have someone watch. I'd also put another three gallons in the tank.0

Yep three gallons on a slant my not be up to the tube, then some fuel down the throat to get the engine turning fast enough, then make sure all your lines are tight from the tank to the pump, a loose fitting will stop the fuel from being picked up.

This may sound silly, but I am trying to get my '49 super six started after a valve job and the gas tank redone. There is no fuel in the line. I put in just over three gallons of gas in the tank, but the fuel pump is not picking it up. When I spray starter fluid in the carburator, the engine sound like it would start with adequat fuel. Do I need to prime the fuel pump? or put another three or so gallons of fuel in the tank. The gauge read empty. I have to get this Hudson back on the road, so any sujestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Arnie
Arnie,a few things to check??.Did you seal the inside of the fuel tank?,if you did,did you have it acid dipped?,and if you didn't and resealed the inside of the tank, did you pull the old screen out of the bottom of the tank. This screen is on the pick-up side of the tank and the sealer completely blocks it off. When you put the pick-up tube back in,it will sometimes push the tube to the side and make it so 3 gallons of fuel won't be enough to pick up.Also,if you soldered the pick-up tube, which they all require[will leak if you don't repair this]did you clock it back in the same position?.This will also be a problem for fuel pick up.An easy way to check if the pick up tube is in the fuel is to take the gas cap off, have someone listen at the filler neck, and someone put real light pressure on the line going back to the tank and see if they here bubbles or gurgling.MAKE SURE THEY DON'T PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON THE LINE.HOPE THIS HELPS.THE OTHER INFO POSTED ON THIS THREAD IS ALL VERY GOOD INFO ALSO.0
