  • front floor pan, I think it is on the right side... you know, there should be a cover, sorta like the master cylinder refill, but on the opposite side...

My '54 has an access plate under the carpet on the right side of the transmission tunnel. There is a short dipstick visible through this.
  • Nieils, The 1951 -53 Hydromatic transmissions had a dipstick on the right hand side of the floor transmission cover just about vertically underneath the ashtray on the floor. If you have a 54 model and it's a Borg Warner tranny, then your dipstick and refill hole is on the left hand side of the hump next to the gas pedal. The 54 floor pan has the extra hole because Borg Warner did not put their dip stick and refill hole on the same side as Hydramatic. But all Hudsons had to have the same tranny cover so the modification to the tranny cover was made to accomodate either transmissionfor that model year. Actually those floor pans can be found in late production 53's as well. BTW it's a very short dipstick -about 7 or 8 inches long.

He's talking about his 51 though he just made a deal for a 53 and all I know is it is automatic too. As for access panels it may have been carpeted over. I didn't realize it until I went to check my brake fluid that the upholsterer who did my car covered up my access.
  • I know exactly what you mean. I had an upholsterer do that to me. So I took the car back to him ,told him about needing to have access to the covers and he cut the carpet and installed a velcro flap. Works great!
