Headers
I have been speaking with Larry at Clifford as I will be picking up some headers form him in the next week or so. I was planning to go right to the ceramic coater with them, but he said I needed to fit them and weld a tube? Anyone had to do this? Also what are you guys with headers doing on the carb chokes? Kind of a unique deal how the tubes go through the exhaust manifold for heat. Any suggestions on all this so I can plan for the job.
Thanks,

The easiest way to get the carb choke heat from a header installation is to make new tubes. The new tubes must be long enough to allow them to be clamped to a header tube with an appropriate size stainless steel radiator clamp. Problem solved.0

Are you supposed to weld the two peice headers? I didn't. Just slipped it in place. Doesn't leak.0

Same here. Never heard mention of welding that joint before. Bought mine about a year ago.0 -

The headers on my 51 Pacemaker are two pieces, have been on the car for twenty years. Never welded, don't leak plus it's easier to take them off in two pieces.

Some Of You Mis Understand The Wellding . You Do Not Weld The Headers Together At Their Connecting Slip Joint, They Are Talking About Weldin 1/4 Inch Tubes To Connect The C Arb Heat Riser Tubes To. This Enables The Chokes To Work. Bill Albright0

Have any of you had your headers coated? Does this pose a problem with the slip joint? I would hate to have them coated and no longer slip together. Until I get mine, I am not sure what the slip joint is for. Larry at Clifford suggested I fit mine, then weld the slip then have them coated. I would assume the slip is for easier fitting,if I tack it together, how is it going to fit?0

Are Clifford making slip joint headers again? last time I talked to Larry they were only making shorty one piece headers as shown here in this pic. I bought two powdered coated headers they fit perfectly. Didn't know he was making slip joint again.0

The ones I got from Clifford last year were one piece shorty's. it took five months to get them and they didn't fit. They drew about 1/4 inch when they were welded together. Had to go back and I'm aware this was a big problem with that batch of 20 or so. I think he is using a different fabricator now and they have a block (or something) to fit them up to. Wasn't aware he went back to 2 piece, but that would certainly solve the problem as that was where the fit problem was (Between #4 and #5)0

Yeah Larry said they have a block and they test fit them. Larry replaced one of mine that didn't fit. They are good header for price but of course its catch-22 if people don't buy them they cannot stock them and make more. People think they will take long time to get and they are right as Hudson header orders are few and far between. When he makes them I buy a set every time even if I don't need them.0

Will they fit a 55 Hash? I will buy a set if they will clear the towers.

Don't know that for sure but they seem to be inline with the manifold on my engine so they do not loop out to much.
I would also see if they have them for your Twin H Mule, make it go better....0 -
Had 2 sets of Headers Jet Hot coated with no problem at the slip fit pipe..0

you dont want to weld them together before installing, that is the purpose of the slip joint, that is the only way you can install them on the engine in the car is to put on one section at a time, when welded together, you will need to pull the engine out to install, then fight the whole assy to get it back in, BILL ALBRIGHT0

Just in case anyone is interested, I got a set of clifford one piece shortys with 2 outlets. They are installed on my short WB coupe. Both pipes although very tight appear to have enough room to clear the firewall and exit thru the opening beside the transmission. It did not go to the pipe benders yet. This would be a plus to me as I didn't care for the style that had the one pipe exitting the inner fender and under the frame.0

For the recorder...they must have them in-stock. I order one The last week of February and it was at my door on March 4th. Just thought I'd give anyone thinking of ordering the heads up0 -
The only complaint I have with mine is the slipjoint leaks. I don't want to weld it as Larry recommended as I might not get them off if I need to. I put a small exhaust clamp on it and it helped some. Hoping a little carbon my seal the rest as I get more miles on it.0
