232 Powerdome

Expert Adviser
Roger Harmon here, with the 46 P/U and 232 engine (serial # 5002702). I can't seem to find many details on the 232. Can anyone provide some or steer me to some detailed info about this engine?
I am thinking about making the truck a daily driver. Any idea what range of fuel economy I can expect? How much do you think I can I boost the mileage with a sure-fire module, header and high compression head? Have any of you guys tried this kind of stuff?
My clutch is still stuck. It's too cold here in West Point VA for the mixed solvents to do their job. I'm going to drain the clutch and try straight lacquer thinner, unless somebody yells not to. I have a broomstick holding the clutch down, and I have been starting it every few days and bringing it up to temp, but no luck so far.
Thanks in advance. R/ Roger.

The 232 is a rugged motor having a standard bore of 3 9/16 and a stroke of 3 7/8, and with reasonable care will last longer than you will.
Depending on the rear end ratio, you should get 15 - 17 mpg.
To check your rear end ratio, jack up 1 wheel, mark the tire and rotate it 2 turns and count the drive shaft revolutions. 4.56 and 4.11 were common.
An overdrive transmission will lower your rpm by about 30% and give you a couple more mpg.
Larger diameter tires have the effect of higher gearing and should help mileage a little. 16 inch wheels were optional for this truck.0 -
Far from an expert on the cork clutch but lacquer thinner eats up lots of things and I sure would'nt put it in there unless one of the cork clutch BUILDERS says go for it.0

Roger,
The 232 is better than an original 212 motor if for no other reason the 232 is totally pressure lubricated. The 232 already has the smallest combustion chamber head (high compression) of the 232-262 & 308 motor group apparently to make up for lack of displacement and usually need a slightly lower gear ratio in hilly terrain. I suggest for maximum efficiency go with electronic ign, mill the head a bit, ensure the valves & rings are sealed, and enjoy...0 -
Bill A,
I sent you a note. Please let us all know your method.
