Front crank seal
I put the complete Best gasket kit in my 308 when I rebuilt it. The front seal has leaked since the start right around where it seals or supposed to seal to the crank. The crank was replaced by one redone by Randy Mass. Has anyone had this issue? Are there different make seals I should look into, should I contact Best and complain. I am going to have to pull it down as it leaks just enough to be messing up all my fresh paint not to mention driveways.
Thanks,

Rob, I told you in our last conversation that the front timing cover seal in the rebuild gasket sets sold by Best Gasket or Fel Pro is not the best front seal for the Hudson. The crankshaft certainly is not the issue since the seal rides on the sleeve inserted on the crank. I memtioned to you I have the good front seals made by Timken part number 450084 in stock. I also mentioned to you I can send you one or you can get one in your area. You will see the difference when you get one. Get your starter issues and carb issues straighten out yet? Good luck.

You don't have this problem do you? This is from Ken Cates web site.
"Sealing the front crank may require more than changing the timing the timing cover gasket and the crank seal. HUDSON crank seals are known to cause groove cutting into the crankshaft spacer. The crankshaft spacer rides on the font of the crank just ahead of the crank timing gear sprocket. This spacer is what keeps the oil seal lip in place and the oil inside the timing cover. When replacing the crank seal remove and clean the spacer. It is a good idea to make sure you mark the side, which is toward the front of the engine when removing the spacer. Upon reassembly REVERSE the spacer so that a new and unblemished surface is provided for the crank seal."0 -
FYI
In addition to the above good Tips, I read that sometimes a fresh rebuild with tighter clearances may put more oil into the timing cover than can return back into the pan fast enough causing premature front seal leakage. The advice suggested drilling an additional lower drain hole.0
