1936 Terraplane grill chrome or black or what?

I have a question regarding the center of the 36 Terraplane grill I've seen them chromed and painted which it the correct original finish?

Still looking for a sidemount cover. Here is a photo of a Hudson eight, sidecover, not sure if they are the same but it's the only photo I could find.

Thanks to all Ironman

  • The center of mine is chromed, Ironman. I'm pretty sure that's the way it came...

The Model 61 Terraplane coupe I had for a while was painted silver. At least what was left looked like silver. I sanded it all down, primed and painted it with silver paint. Looked like original.

Lower priced models, like the Model 61, may have been painted; higher priced models may have been chromed.

They originally were "velachrome" which is a paint that is silver. When I got mine, it was painted the same color as the pinstrip. However, I have done a complete restoration of my '36T series 62 custom 4 door sedan and I chromed my grill. Most of the ones I have seen redone are chromed.

By the way, you don't have to do a complete wheel cover. You can use a hubcap and get just a metal tread cover, these were used on both Hudson & Terraplane. I have never seen a side-mount complete wheel cover for a Terraplane for sale, however they were made.

The grille with the hood ornament I posted is original.
