FYI

I am utilizing a Fisher Race Damper (www.fisherconcepts.net) available through Vector Racing. (562 861 6882)

Fisher makes both a Street & Race Damper for Hudson. My Damper will accept a bolt on Chevy aluminum pully.

Great Tip. Been thinking that way for another motor

Mike, could you post a picture ? What year Chev ?

    Thanks Rudy
  • i don't know how to post a pic on here , i'd email you a pic of it installed on my 254 and the engine on my trailer .

the ballancer is just an 8" small block chevy and the lower pulleys of the short waterpump configuration . i had to search out a waterpump pulley from a dodge pickup . you will have to redrill the 4 mounting holes on the waterpump pulley on the dodge to work .

    mike
  • here is a pic of it on the 8 if this works .. hope you like my headers and such too

    Unique1963,

I like your whole set-up on the 8 cyl.. What other modifications were made to the motor?
  • it has a 390 cfm 4 bbl . a dodge electronic distributor, pcv valve , and i am putting a 700r4 behind it all . i also built new brackets to mount a alternator ac and power steering pump .i think thats it so far . hope weather cooperates soon so i can get back to work on it .

Unique, glad to see your Mods on the 8-cyl. Would you take a close-up of the Pulley ? and of the Water Pump ? I have a new water pump and it is not for a 48-56 6-cyl engine . and a New oil pump for an 8-cyl.

Thanks Rudy (i will not be using them)
  • if we have a good day here i will pull my 29 model a out of the garage so i can get to the engine to take some more pics for you ... the oil pump sounds like something i might be interested in if it isn't too expensive . mine is working , but never know when one might need one .

  • unique, could you post a picture of the pcv valve?

    PCV

I think PCV valves are one of those little things that help todays engines last longer.. To retro-fit my Hudson's, I remove the draft Tube & install a Chevy PCV valve into a gromet at the valve cover then pull vacume from an intake fitting. I also insert a Mopar type breather cap on the oil fill pipe with a hose over to the airfilter base for complete crankcase ventilation...It seems to work ok for me.
  • seen it done on a pressure lube six but never on a splasher as it affects the way the engine oils due to pressure in the crankcase. Starves the engine of oil.
  • been trying to resize my pics of my engine with mods , but so far with my software i am unable to make them small enough to upload ...

    mike
  • and why would a pcv valve do anything to the oiling system? makes no sense . been converting old engines to this for years and no problems .

    mike
  • You tell me why you would do it on a splasher engine and what benefit you get and I'll tell you why you don't do it.
  • well i don't come on here to argue so i will take my 30 plus years of mechanicing

and keep quiet other than tell of the benefit .

you don't gag from down draft emissions at a stoplight with a pcv valve
  • 30+ years ....cool same here. I am not arguing just trying to figure out why you are doing in on a splasher. As of yet never had a properly tuned Hudson gag at a stoplight.

Only experience I have with pcv valves on splashers is a friend of mine went that route and some valves and lifters failed. Top end wasn't oiling right. Couple of years ago talked to Bill Albright about that he said never go pcv on splashers. Talked to couple more old Hudson guys got the same response has to do with positive pressure in the crankcase instead of a slight vacuum as the oiling system was designed for. Stops the full misting of the oil.

Here is a thread from before where some others on the board weigh in. http://www.classiccar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12190&highlight=%27pcv+valve%27+splasher

Of course I do not know how you are doing your setup. My friend removed the breather tube and fitted a pcv valve then ran from manifold. Only thing he upgraded when he was setting the valves. After he replaced the burnt valves and lifters he changed it back never had a problem. Might not be related but I think it was. Was a 51 254.
