ESSEX 24 Tourer - Engine Color?

Unknown
edited November -1 in HUDSON
Hi!

My father and me are restoring a ESSEX Tourer 1924, surfing today i found a colorspecchart for HUDSON/ESSEX 22-27 and there i read that the original color of the body of the car is "Blue" (also is confusing because for the serial number 160499, that chart indicates that our car is a "Coach", not a "Tourer").

OK, the body work it's delayed so i'll search more for that, but this week we must decide what color apply to the engine. Some people told us that it was "Gray" (plain gray)? but on other page i found it was "Silver" :S

Anyone knows/remembers what is the original color of this engine?

Thks a lot for your help.

PS: I attach a photo of the car, so if maybe we're wrong (AGAIN?) wih the year and model, you can help us.

Thanks again!

One thing that does not seem correct: the wheels are much smaller than the original!

I believe the correct tire size is: 4.40x23

You can see how much larger the wheels are in this car:

  • Hi Jon B!

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the wheels and tires aren't originals, my grandpa changed them years ago because in our country it was very hard to find tires for that wheels. In fact, these tires in the photo are bike tires ;)

Now that you mention the wheels, do you know where can i find (or who) a set of wooden wheels of the original size for our car? How much do they cost?

About the original doubt in my post, we're just about to paint the engine, but don't know yet what color use on the engine, anyone references? ideas? suggestions?

Thanks a lot for your help.

The tires are much easier to purchase now, than they were many years ago.

http://www.restored-classic.com/essex-parts/ is a good place to look for Essex parts.

Also, are you in the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club? If not, you might want to join -- http://www.hudsonclub.org/ .

I am not sure about the color for your engine.... I think someone will give you a suggestion, before long.

You could also check Ebay, under "Essex" http://motors.shop.ebay.com/items/essex_W0QQ_nkwZessex

You can also join the Essex group, on the Internet, at http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/EssexSuper6/ and ask your question there.

I'm sorry I don't know the correct color for your engine, but I assume someone at the Forum will give you this information soon.
  • Wow! What a classy ole car...
  • Thanks for your answer.

About the HET Club, not yet but it's in our plans :)

I ask the same question in the yahoo group this afternoon too.

Maybe i can abuse of your kindness and ask what color is "acceptable" based on your experiences and the cars you have seen?

The actual color is a dark green, and i definitly think that we must paint it with some more "classic" color.

Thanks again for the links and info.

Malcruzg, I asked a friend in the Hudson club, where to find the original spoked wheels for your car. He says that when these cars were junked (many years ago), quite often the entire front axle (with the wheels) was used to make a utility trailer. And so, years later, you will still find these trailers, which are sometimes for sale. So, you could probably find the FRONT wheels fairly easily. Unfortunately, the REAR wheels were not easy to remove from the rear axle, so were junked with the cars. However, even when these old cars are found in a state of complete disrepair, sometimes the rear axles and wheels are still salvageable.

My friend says that he MIGHT have a pair of the front wheels for your car but they are stored at another property he owns, and the shed (in which they are stored) has collapsed. He would have to go and look for them. He lives in Massachusetts, USA, so the shipping expenses (to Colombia) would fairly expensive. If you wish, you can e-mail him for more information. His name is Carl Weber and his address is HEThudson654@aol.com . (please remove the HET before sending your e-mail)

"a lot of these cars were junked and the front axle was used to make trailers. I may have a pair of fronts, but I can't be sure as the snow caved in one of my storage sheds at my other house and that's where those wheel are. As for rear wheels, I haven't any idea where to tell him to look. These wheels may have been used on other cars, but not ford. I'll have to do some research to find out which car it maybe. Regardless, rear wheels are rarer then fronts as fronts were easily removed.
  • Thanks again for your info.

I think that the wheels change will be great, but maybe later, our plans of the restoration had been doubled in costs by now.

This week the engine was painted, we choose a "Dark Gray" color, based on some docs and the advices of a couple of owners via the Yahoo group.

At this time the car (the parts that will conform the car again) are in another city and my father is in front of the restoration process. As soon i get the photos, i'll posted so you can see it and we can thank you again for the advices ;)
