What color is a 308 in a 53 hornet , Red or Gold? Also this hornet has 2 antennas 1 in the middle of the windshield and one on the right fender. Also what type of auto trans fluid and brake fluid is the best to use:):) Thanks John drivergo2

  • The 53 was gold. 54 was red. Hornets normally had factory antennas installed on the roof. Dealers and owners could install antennas on the fender if the car was not so equipped at the factory. For a 54 job its a LOT easier to install the antenna on the fender. Use Dextron II for your tranny. If you have non silicone fluid in your brake lines ,use a DOT 3 brake fluid. Your car may have had a replacement fender added from a car that didn't come with a factory radio thusly an antenna on the fender.

Why is the 54 easier on the fender? I was going to guess maybe just the oddball Hornet Special like mine had the fender antenna.

Well if you never replaced an antenna for a 54 that was a roof mount ,try it once. The center bar that was on all stepdowns from 48-53 is gone with the new design so the lead wire from the mast was routed through the headliner and down the 'A' pillar to the back of the dash and then the radio. . Your real headache is having to deal with the headliner when you fish the lead wire over to the pillar. Doing one on a fender is realitively easy . Drill the hole and feed the wire to the radio. The roof mount is not as simple or as quick.

    Drivergo2:

I have a '53 Hornet and the engine is red. I know that it is usually thought that '53s were gold but I have checked the engine number (it is a7C) and it really is red.

I tried to start a thread on this a few months ago but I still haven't heard from anyone else who has a red '53 engine. Is your's red?
