Model and Year Differences

In a recent thread, I found out that in 51, Hudson changed from using a hose to a pipe from the water pump back towards the firewall. This pipe bent nicely around the head.

Is there a compilation or book somewhere that details the changes for every year of H.E.T.? Since I own only a stepdown, I would be happy with the stepdown era of Hudson only.

  • just call steve conyers in melbourne, he is an amazing wealth of hudson knowledge, stepdowns especially. i wouldnt be surprised if he knew every tiny little detail about pre stepdowns too, just i've never had a conversation with him about them.

    someone should bottle that guy.

his collection of spare hudsons is about to take a hit though, his property is going to the developers.

I don't know of any source for what you are looking for, Clubs that condone (or promote) judging will have compiled such data. Model A Ford clubs come to mind. They have a joint judging standard that has been researched to death. The dentil floss guys have it down to a gnats whisker on what is corect and what isn't. I for one agree with the non judging dogma of The Hudson Club, but I also feel sad that the information that a serious restorer will need is not being recorded anywhere. Preservatiopn of originalityshould be one of the objectives of the hobby. Those with first hand knowledge are either passing on or like in my case just plain forgetting what I DID know. . I recall being chastized by senior members back in the 60's when I would ask about originality, like colors of engines and assessories. " We are not a judging club" was the message. Frankly I don't think a car HAS to be judged, but it would be nice to know if it is authentic or not. I see the originality questions surfacing very frequently here on the forum. All it takes is for an ebay ad to say "original" to start a real dog fight! It sure would be nice if someone would start a process of compileing the answers to the restorers questions.

Fortunately, the "senior" members lethargy is slowly being overcome - and by just such questions as the one that started this thread.

There are some of us "senior" members (I've been around for 35+ years so I guess that makes me senior) who really do hate that attitude. It's one of the reasons I've been putting all the stuff I can on my web site - and larger material on Gregg's web site.

While the material we have doesn't address this question, there's still a ton of useful data on our sites and, best of all, it's free for the use. We just ask you DO NOT copy and try to resell.

Well said Super Dave. I am on the National Judging Committee for one of the other clubs. "We have technical representatives" for each year of car and sometimes for models of some years of cars. These technical representatives become the repository for the literature and facts for each make. As a mater of fact, one technical guy for the year 1932 has a pristine car on a hoist in his shop just behind his computer and when someone asks him a question he will look at the car, take a photo and send it off to you. If you want to know if that bolt was stainless or steel you are only a question away. I play both sides of the street with this judging stuff and I understand the position our national leadership has taken and fully support that position. I have also stood by my stepdown and had a number of people tell me that my engine is the wrong color, or why the car next to me has a red engine or the color of the manifold should be this or that. As I answer the questions often someone will disagree with me. I have been consulting (free service) with a restoration shop near where I live to help with the research on a stepdown like mine. I am supprised at how easy some data is to get, and how some data seems to be lost in a vast void. I do wish we could set up a group of volunteers that would become the expert on a specific make or model. That, as Alex is doing, would provide the service to any who would need that information. Dumb question (as an old guy I should know) but, does the Hudson Club have a library of information?

Check the "Membership Services" area of your current WTN (White Triangle News). The first listing is "Club Library". Contact John O'Halloran for any info you would like to see.
