I have no verification, as the speedo of course only went up to 99,999 before it zeroed again. However, my first 1929 Hudson 7 passenger sedan was in daily use as a Service Car/ Rural delivery / Taxi from 1929 to 1952. The average daily run was 250 miles. Based on only a 5 day week, that is around 1,500,000 miles, and it was used weekends as well. and it showed. There was nothing on the car that wasn't totally worn out. Took me five years to rebuild.

Geoff, If you had a Hudson that clocked 1.5million miles, how many engine rebuilds do you think that it had before you got it.... ?????

Tom Childs (one of our older members) had a 46 Super 6 with over 300,000 miles on it. Don't know what ever happened to it. Cliff Minard.

Amazingly, the crankshaft was still standard, though very worn - .004 out of round, and the cylinders had been sleeved back to standard with Chrome liners. This would have been due to inadequate air filtering on dusty roads, causing the ingestion of grit into the bores. There was no detectable wear on the camshaft, though the inlet valves and guides were very. The bodywork had been extensively patched up, and the interior re-upholstered, so the engine probably had at least three or four rebuilds in that time I would imagine. I did speak to the original driver, but unfortunately the workshop staff had all passed on.

Hi Harry---No, not sure but through my foggy memory it comes to me that Tom had said that it had only one complete rebuild. Tom had two of these 46 Super sixes, one he kept for Sundays & shows & the other for basic transportation.---Cliff Minard.

I find al this very helpful. I'm trying to see how long I can go on my 54 Hornet. I have put about 35000 miles on it in 5 yrs. The engine was a bit tired when I got it.... the only thing that I've done is adjust the valves and turne ups.... However... I know that i'm liviing on borrowed time as it's idling rough and the valves are worn... I'm not to far away from a rebuild... I believe it's already been bored .40 over from who ever did it last.... Can I go .60 over ???

I bought a 49 Super Six in 57 with 72K on it and ran it until 144K with no rebuild or adjustment. Still running good but the frame went.

Then bought a 52 Hornet coupe from my mechanic with over 200K on it who used it to haul his Hudson dirt racer to the track. Rear main hammered a little but it was still hot. Ran it for a couple of years until the motor wouldn't start when it was cold and my wife was expecting. Sold it the next summer to a guy who took it to the dirt track the next Saturday night and came in 2nd with it.

My engine just started making a rythmic ticking sound.... Sounds valve related...
