FYI

Daytona 500 Race this week officially 'kicks off' the NASCAR Season. To help build 'Racing Fever' this year, NASCAR authorized Speed Channel to show the beginning of Daytona starting with some footage of early Stock Cars racing on the beach to the building of the huge Speedway complex.

Back then Drivers could man-handle heavy cars without Power Steering, Seat belts, roll cages, through huge ruts on all dirt Tracks, usually Fairgrounds, several nights a week at speeds exceeding 100 mph in the straightaways...

Often Spectators stood right next to the Track and races did not always stop when cars rolled over......

Watch for the Hudson's.......

What were these cars new $3600-$3800.00 for $37.89 @ month :D

Compare that to a new car $36,000-$38,000.00 for $600.00+ @ month

    Is this really progress
  • In becoming the first foreign automaker to crash the emphatically American party of Nascar

NOT the first foreign nameplate to run NASCAR!!!

In the early '50s, everything from Jaguar, Mercedes, even a VW Bug ran in at least one NASCAR event! Toyota is the first Japanese carmaker to enter, but hardly the first foreign nameplate to run. Theyare the first to crash the party en force; i.e. a concerted factory effort.

I read somewhere that the Cup engines for Toyota are not the same as the Truck series engines. NASCAR supposedly said that the truck engine was far too advanced for the Cup series.. Anyone know what the differences are between the two series Toyota power plants are? If any?

I read where Toyota met with NASCAR and were given the engine parameters to remain within and told to build similar to 'Cup' Engines currently in use by the 'Big Three'. Toyota's Truck engine was already a maxed out & older design that would not be competitive in 'Sprint Cup'.

(I dont have the Toyota specifics but they are described here in earlier Post by 54HSWH)

I do know that the Stock Cars have lost all their Brand Identity (except for the grille Decal) and the Engines for any Brand are no longer Production Motors to be found in a street car. They are strickly Race Motors...

Dodge revised their Race Motor a yr ago and Chevy introduced a newer design Race Motor middle last Season. Ford Race Motor is the oldest design but Jack Roush (not Ford) is working with NASCAR on a newer design to be introduced soon to be more competitive.

Yeah, nobody uses carbs anymore, but at least Chevy offers a pushrod V8 in the Impala, even if it is FWD.
