the service manual numbers the studs front to back, each row of studs right to left as looking from the back of the engine to the front. (example numbers 1,4,7,10,13,16, and 19 all run front to back down the passenger (( rightside)) of the engine) pull down the nuts to just snug starting at 11-8-5-2-14-17-20. go back to 11, now pulling down fairly tight ang 11-10-12-8-7-9-14-13-15-5-4-6-17-16-18-2-1-3-20-19-21 now go back to 11 (again) and final torque (my notes from jan/feb WTN say 60-65 ft-lbs for 7/16" studs) in the same order you just did for the intermidiate pull down (i.e. 11-10-12-8-7-9- etc.). people have told me this "final" torque number prior to running the engine should be 50-55 ft-lbs and the 60-65 is after the drive when you retorque. having said all of this you will probably get better advice in a few moments from guys much smarter than me with a lot more experience. best of luck. tom0

Dave,--- Motor's Manual says 45 lbs. of torque for these old splashers. I have previously gone to 50 lbs., but think 65 is too much & threatens to distort block. Tightening sequence is to start with the center studs & systematically work towards the ends, ie. 3 center studs then the next 3 towards the front, then the next 3 towards the rear & so on. Good Luck. Cliff Minard.0
