If you install a pertronix Dist. and coil, Will you have to change the spark plug gap. Or change to a different type all together. :) thanks John drivergo2

    Hi,

The hotter spark generated by the pertronix will fire a larger gap than standard ignition. I don't think you have to change anything, but I have found that by increasing the gap to about .040. makes my 262 respond better.. Might even increse gas mileage ?
  • I didn't change anything on the 55 Hornet and haven't had any problems. There was nothing in the pertronix instructions regarding changing the gap.

  • Harry,

How do you like the performance of the Pertronix over that of the stock points? What improvement have you noticed?
  • Dave; the car seems to start better. I don't know about performance because I didn't have any until I got the carb problems worked out and I did the pertronix in the middle of sorting out those problems. The nice thing is I don't have to worry about points and condensers going bad or burning up. I need to find another distributor to carry in the trunk so if I do have a problem I'll have a spare with points and condenser to get home on. I replaced the coil at the same time so I don't have that worry either. I've only had coil problems with one vehicle, a 38 Ford Pick-Up that seemed to burn up coils regularly for reasons unknown to me. In those days those coils were a dime a dozen so it wasn't a problem but I'm glad I'm not dealing with those problems today. I think the pertronix was a good investment if for no other reason than the piece of mind I get not worrying about points.

  • Got my plugs gapped to 40 with the Pertronix.
  • Harry,

Good going. I bet that extra juice does help starting. Running the correct plugs and wires helps too. Well, you certainly don't have to worry about the points and condensor going bad or burning up, just the Pertronix. Sorry, couldn't help myself. :p I've never had problems with coils. Carrying spares makes sense if you're going a distance. A road service card is a good idea too.
