:DHere are a couple stories about my '49 Hudson Commodore Sedan. One night around 2:am I stopped at a dounut shop after work, I had my five year old son with me. We wnet inside the shop, sat at the counter and a man who had been sitting with female companion came up and said what year is your Studebaker? My five year old son looked at him and said it's a Hudson, at which time the mans female companion said even the little kid knows what kind of car it is. The woman appologized for the mans ignorance and took him and left. Another time I arrived a bit early for an orphan car show and while sitting in the parking lot, a young couple came over to look at the "cool merc", as they walked around looking at the Hudson , the guy kept telling his girlfriend how the top was chopped and some other customm modifications had been done like step down floors were from lowerting the body over the frame. He went on and on with his ignorance trying to impress the girl. When I explained that the car was Hudson, built by Hudson and it was not chopped and was factory stock, he became very irritated and somewhat hostile, I decided the best thing to do was leave as I had embaressed him, exspecially when his girlfreind replied that the name plate spelled Hudson. I left.

    Here you go Aaron:

    1949 Mercury price range = $1,978.00 to $2,715.00

    1949 Hudson price range = $2,069.00 to $3,138.00

Remember, a few hundred dollars back then was equal to many months mortgage payments.

Thanks Dave! ... yep that proves it... Merc is a poor man's Hudson. haha Afterall kids who wanted to imitate James Dean back in the day probably couldn't have afforded a Hudson until they were used. ... Some people get Mercs and chop em to get the looks Hudson already had. (factory 11" windows) Except for the few who want even less visibility in their windows than that. haha.

My favorite quote, "No one knows what you think they do!"
  • This sort of comment is not restricted to Hudsons:

I overheard a man at the Luray museum point out a Studebaker Hornet to his son.

And a man told me that Studebaker never made a straight eight. The fact that I owned one did not dent his ignorance.
